I am nervous following from the xbox 360 failure problems at launch..

if I had a ps4 ordered I would be very nervous seeing any hardware issues tbh.. do they have excess stock to replace problematic hardware even???

in saying that I really hope this will not be widespread and all you lads picking up a ps4 have the best of luck with your purchase.

There are going to be lots of exclusives on the PS4 I'm going to want, and the above is an example of something I'll definitely be wanting to get.

    Not surprised.

I'm not sure if it's the tales games I'm thinking of but a lot of timed exclusive JRPGs came out on 360 first and then a PS3 version was released with a substantial amount of additional content. While Japan might not be the biggest market especially for home console games anymore it's still the big market for these games, and a lot of the 360 gamers there were repeatedly given the short end.

JRPG are not a huge seller in the US, I'd say once the ONE's install base increase they'll release them.

Still kind of worrying since Sony has never released a console that didn't have problems at launch.

    Name one company that didn't?

    Nintendo.

I have a launch Gameboy, a launch SNES, a launch N64, a launch DSfat, a launch cube and a launch wii.

Some of them are 20 years old.....They all still work.

Meanwhile, I've had a ps1, a ps2 and a 360 all break on me. More modern tech in some cases but the ps1 was a lot flimsier than the N64 and my launch wii has never failed despite my 360 frying three times. Three!

So, fewer people will play the games than otherwise might, and that's a good thing?

It was a very small portion of gamers that played the xbox versions, thats is why they are going exclusive now with Sony, well that is how Namco explained it anyway.

I'm sure Nippon Ichi will follow suit as well. I'd put money on the PS4 being a small success and being big with the Otaku crowd in Japan so hopefully we'll see some of the smaller RPG companies continue to target it like they have with the PS3. I doubt we'll see the big titles such as Dragon Quest and Megaten move off the much popular handhelds, with the exception of FF of course.

Mods, any chance the Gamespace Pro could be added to the poll?

    Console war heats up.

Wii had disc reading problems for dual layer dvds on a lot of models, the GBA had no backlight, the ds phat had a poor and awkward design and I've certainly had problems with cart readings in my snes. They might not have ceased operating like some others but there were certainly plenty of significant problems with them.

It didn't actually. What the Wii laser actually had trouble reading was dual layer commercial discs....basically people who had pirated games and burned them to generic discs.

The dual layer discs pressed by Nintendo themselves never had any reading issues. It was just the pirates.
    SmurfX wrote: »

But that was a design choice to keep the cost down. It's not a hardware failure....which is what we are talking about, isn't it?

Again, design choices are not hardware failures.

I'm sure you did but it still works doesn't it? A few kinks with hardware over 20 years old is to be expected.

Blowing dust off the carts oxidised the connectors and made things even worse. Most people were making things worse by doing it!

Looking at the launch reviews for the PS4 and they are shocking. Lots of so so sequels that I have zero interest in.

They're not great in fairness and the it's not going to get much better in the short term. That's why I'm thinking of leaving things a year; it'll be difficult for me to not get caught up in the hype though. As it stands atm, Having had a hands on with the PS4 controller - my big fear with the platform - I'm almost certainly going with Sony now. I will probably pick up an XO sometime down the line.

The X1 line up is a lot better than the PS4 one.

The PS4 has more launch games overall. Most titles are cross plats but for exclusives at launch there are only 2 each so it depends what you are into. Only 2 games in it each way so I don't see how the X1 lineup is way better imo. Personally I'd rate both Forza 5 and DR 3 above Killzone SF, I never liked Knack even from E3, you could tell it was missing something.

Still getting both at launch so have the best of both worlds. I remember the 360 and PS3 launch and for people who say the X1 and PS4 launch lineup is poor have very short memories. The 360's was ok'ish and the PS3 was nothing basically, the PS4 and X1 have a great selection if you are not buying cross gen games on the older consoles which I see personally see as a waste as both the 360 and PS3 are well past it and were maxed out at the end of last year.

In the short term you have games like Watch Dogs, MGS Ground Zero, Planetside 2 (PS4) and Titanfall (X1) all due by March.

I will take worse launch line up with better games later on, and a console with more grunt, over better Launch line up. :pac:

PS4 launch games dont suck, they are just okay. I still looking forward to Killzone. I think a lot of reviewers were expecting something magic from next gen, Like some VR Killzone babes sucking you off with special integrated pump on loading screens. Or that you will be able to go on some tourist Helgast theme parks etc. To make it worse, Killzone gets better reviews then Ghost and people are still buying more COD and throwing poo at Killzone. That makes no sense to any intelligent life form. Specially when people rubbing in those reviews.
This gen of consoles is not magical, they are here to bring back the power from the household hoover levels. Just because you slap Next gen title on damn thing it does not mean it will redefine gaming. People have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay blown out expectations from next generation consoles, that includes x box one too.

I think it is fair to have high expectations. The pace of progress in other tech fields has set the bar. We've had 7/8 years and we are only seeing minor improvements in gameplay and 4 year old pc graphics. The xbox one will be outclassed by phones if it manages to stay around in the next four years.

I'm still really looking forward to Killzone. All those reviews make no mention of the online game and that's the big draw for me. Killzone 3 was a brilliant online experience that genuinely felt different to the multitude of CoD clones out there.

Most phones have already stronger and faster hardware on paper then ps3/360, but why I dont see BF4/Ghost/Skyrim/Witcher 2 games on them? Only washed out mobile versions of those games.
Thats another thing, Mobile games will always have casual masses, but mobile gaming wont be able to give same experience as dedicated gaming hardware. Unless if Angry birds is classified as a proper gaming these days and not just a thing to do while you laying a brick.

Yep. The negative reviews seem to all say the same thing they always do, dull, unimaginative, etc, etc. I always enjoy Killzone games anyway, so I'm confident about it.

You're clearly not following processor manufacturing trends then. Many analysts have said they expect this to be the last console generation in the traditional mould.

Can't see that happening. Even if the likes of Apple were to introduce a games orientated Apple TV they still wouldn't be competing in the same space as Xbox/PS. Tech Analysts are the greatest bunch of spoofers known to man, they're a joke, with their goal being to drive whatever stock their employers hold - see the likes Gene Munster and Piper Jaffray.

Console cycle unlikely to end, as you can’t do Gran Turismo 6 on a smartphone – Sony boss
The rise of tablet and smartphone gaming doesn’t mean consoles are on the way out, Sony America boss Jack Tretton has said, any more than the popularity of PCs did.

“It’s funny, I’ve heard about the ‘last console’ since 1986, and only because that’s when I entered the business. I’ve managed to ride the ‘last console’ wave for the last, what is that, 27 years or so?” he said.

“There’s a reason the console came about: Sitting in front of a big-screen TV on a couch with your friends. To get the immersive depth in gaming and to get the social experience of sitting around the living room, we’re not going to huddle around a tablet. We’re not going to huddle around a smartphone.”

Tretton said that mobile technology will go a long way, but it will always be trying to become a console. He also said this isn’t the first time consoles have been expected to go the way of the dodo.

“The threat in the 80s was that the PC was going to take over, and it’s certainly alive and well, but it hasn’t taken it over,” he said.

“I think smartphone and tablet gaming is actually additive. I think the next 27 years bode much better for the gaming industry than the last 27 did. It was ploughing the road and establishing it as mainstream entertainment. Now it is mainstream entertainment, and you’re going to have generations of people who grew up with gaming. 27 years from now, you’ll be hard-pressed to find somebody that was never a gamer in some way, shape or form.”

Indeed, a bunch of new companies are, arguably, getting into the console business, with products like Ouya and Steam Machines. Tretton said this happens all the time, but nobody remembers when they fail.

“The console used to be a narrow-genre, narrow-audience, single-purpose device. Now it’s multimedia to a more diverse audience, casual and core, with games from free-to-play all the way up to $60. If gaming exists somewhere, we want PlayStation to be there,” he sadded.

“So we’ll bring our games to smartphones and tablets, we’ll certainly make it available on competitive devices, we have our own smartphones and tablets. Anywhere the gamer is, we want to be. But there’s a limitation to what we can do.

“We can’t take Gran Turismo 6 and put it on a smartphone or a tablet. It’s just gonna be a lousy experience. It’s not going to be what it is. Conversely, you can go out today and play Angry Birds on your PlayStation 3 and have a great time. I’m not sure why you’d want to do that, but you could.

“It’s easier to migrate up. I’ve seen some great videos on YouTube, but I don’t confuse them with Hollywood Oscar-winning hits. That’s why you go to the movie theater, even though there’s something to be said for watching something on your smartphone. We call it ‘good-enough gaming.’”

Tretton compared console gaming to drinking fancy wine; some people are happy with a $10 bottle form the supermarket, but others get into wine as a hobby and enjoy premium experiences; that’s console gamers, then.

Handheld gaming can't compete or compare with console gaming they are in two very different leagues.

Can't see someone sinking 100hr+ into an MMO on a device that has touch screen controls only and needs to be charged every few hours. 6'' screen versus a 40''+ for gaming and a proper controller in my hands or mouse and keyboard, I know what I'd pick for gaming.

Analysts said in the '60s that dogfighting was over with advent in BVR missiles and fighters didn't need a gun anymore. How wrong they were.
