Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

1930's theme party. Barber and Tuxedo suggestions (Dublin)

    Hi all,

Apologies if I should have posted this in the Dublin City forum but thought that I would get better advice here. I am going to a 1930's themed party this Friday and want to make a real effort. It's black tie but also intended to be a bit of craic (more like a fancy dress rather than a formal event).

My intention is to get a tux with a white dinner jacket and black trousers. Also would like to get a top hat and cane, just for effect! I know the etiquette for white dinner jackets is that they should be worn in Summer only but I think I should be ok. Question is should the top hat be white or black with my outfit? Also can anyone recommend a place to get such an outfit? I have looked online but would like some recommendations for specific places

Next is the haircut. I currently wear a hairstyle that isn't far off the 1930's style (comb over slicked back) but would like to get a proper cut for this. Can anyone recommend a barbers in Dublin that would be likely to give me a great cut? I've been looking at Woxx they seem to have a good reputation.

Would really appreciate any help with this! Cheers

Technically yes, white jackets are for the tropics, but that's not really worried about too much any more. However, a top hat really shouldn't be worn with regular black tie. White tie, yes. But if you are getting a white jacket stick with black top hat. Only your shirt and jacket should be white it if you're going this route. Trousers, shoes, cummerbund/ waistcoat and bowtie should all be black. And get a self-tie, it doesn't take long to learn (This video is the best i've seen, I learned from it) and it looks great. Much more authentic too!

Not too sure where you'll find a white tux jacket (might need to check out some of the vintage stores in town- I thought debenhams and the likes had them in but I can't find any on their website... )to buy but I'd highly recommend Tangos dress hire in Temple Bar if you're going rental. They also have tophats and canes you can rent!

Only place you want to go for a correct, vintage cut is the Waldorf Barbers on Westmoreland St. They specialise in 1930's styling. They are fantastic, and not terribly expensive. Plus the whole barbershop is the same as it was in 1940, so you can start your vintage evening off properly! ;)

Bond Bros have what you're looking for if you want to rent:

Never used them myself, but friends have in the past, and I've never heard complaints.

That's a fantastic response thank you. There are 3 places that rent white dinner jackets (Tangos, Bond Bros, and Aston) and that's most likely the route I'm going to go. I might leave the top hat out and just go with the cane. I was thinking about it and it might look a bit off... even if it is only a bit of fun.

Fantastic barber's suggestion too. Just checked them out and looks like the real deal. Really looking forward to this now.

Would you recommend anything else that I could include? Again I would like to be a bit OTT with it so I'm open to some suggestions :D

I always find if you're trying to dress vintage or in a particular type if dress it helps to think about your character if that makes any sense? It sounds weird but for example on Thursday I'm actually going to a 1920's Speakeasy, and it would be easy to get overwhelmed when you research! So I decided on a character of the time and built my outfit around it. It makes accessories and stuff much easier to choose.

Good advice. Looking at Jay Gatsby myself from the latest movie. I wouldn't be brave enough to go for the pink suit :D and the fully white setup is too hard to manage. I'd have to go buying suitable shoes etc so would end up costing far more than I'm willing to spend. White dinner jacket was next best thing. Thanks for all of the advice though. One last thing, how much is a style in the Waldorf (if you know)? I can't find pricing online. I'll happily pay for a good cut but nothing outlandish

Full wash cut and style is €29. You get a friction head massage with that too. It's well worth it. :)

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions of Waldorf's. Did an amazing job never had a haircut with such attention to detail and the barber knew exactly what to do. She asked "What style do you want?" and I said "1930's please". That's all it needed. Highly recommend them to anyone.

Also getting my tuxedo this evening and decided to go for white tux jacket, black pants, with dark red, almost burgundy bow tie, suspenders, and pocket handkerchief. No waistcoat for me. Thanks for all the advice much appreciated

Once you go once you don't go back to anywhere else. Like the op said, the attention to detail is amazing. My barber there uses at least 4 different types of cutting implements each time, all for different reasons. Classic place. The smell of their own brand pomade is to die for as well!!!
