    Hi,

I have a friend who wants to register a business name.
She wants to start an e-commerce site, to sell handmade crafts, holistic ebooks/photos, etc.
Has anyone registered an online store before?
She is stuck, not sure what to choose for the business type.
I mean, she is doing the online form of CORE, and then there is a special list (NACE code selection), with different types of businesses... where you need to select "category", "nature of business" and give "more details".
    Should she choose:
    * 52: retail trade except motor vehicles, motorcycles, etc.,
    then
    * other non-store retail sale?

    Would that be correct?

Also, in the business name, should she put just the name of the website? or SITENAME.IE? (she also bought the same name with .com), should she put SITENAME.COM in "Other business name(s) under which this business is conducted"?

She purchased the domain names in July, just to secure that name, and prevent anyone from buying it in the future. However she still didn't buy the hosting for the site, the business didn't start yet, but she's hoping to launch it this month. Does it take long time for a business name to be approved?

    Thank you.

I vaguely remember something about .ie not generally being accepted as part of a RBN, I'll see if I can find the reference.

Could your friend just register the business without the .ie?

Hi Graham, thanks for your reply.
She's actually not sure if she should add .ie in the business name, or not.
The business is only online, no retail store address. She will be making her stuff at home and selling it online.

I would suggest she not add the domain suffix, it would serve no advantage and only complicate the process:

The registration of business names ending in a domain name suffix such as ".ie", ".com", ".net" or prefix such as "www" is considered undesireable, for the purposes of section 14(1) of the Registration of Business Names Act 1963. Proof of domain name ownership is required to process these applications.

    Ah, I see.
She can prove her ownership of the domain names if required. But she wants to know now, for an online store business, if she can really register the business name just as "site name", without ".ie"/".com"? I don't know if you understand our confusion (hope it doesn't sound stupid, lollll).. the business is online, is it ok/legal to register such kind of business name just as "sitename"? Thank you for your help.

If the domain name is lehmannsbuddy.ie /lehmannsbuddy.com there should be no problem registering the business name "lehmannsbuddy" or "lehmanns buddy".

Actually the site name has nothing to do with her name (not a person's name) :D

    In that case, another example:

If the domain name is bellybuttonfluff.ie /bellybuttonfluff.com there should be no problem registering the business name "bellybuttonfluff" or "belly button fluff".

    :pac:

Might also be worth checking nobody had a trademark on the term "belly button fluff" before proceeding.

    Thank you so much! :D

Do you have any idea how to categorize her business?

The paper form is less complicated from what I see (it only asks to describe the nature of the business in details), but the online form has a list to scroll down and pick categories and sub-categories before you give a detailed description. I suggested to her maybe just do it via paper form, but she wants to file this online.

    How does this one look:

    Classification: NACE Rev 2
    Code: 4791
Label: Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet
Synonyms: Internet auctions , Internet direct retail , Mail order (general) retail , Mail order (specialised) retail , Mail order store/catalogue , Radio direct retail , Retail sale of any kind of product by mail order , Retail sale of any kind of product over the internet , Telephone direct retail , Television direct retail , Direct mailing company ,

    It makes perfect sense.
However, in the online form, when we search for that, we can't find it in the list. loll
