    I'd also advice skipping 4.

Ah it's still worth playing. I had a lot of fun playing through it recently but it's definitely the weakest MGS.

Cant wait for this but before I get into it, im looking for a decent place to brush up on the Metal Gear lore.

I played 1 to death, can't really remember 2, played 3 and never played any of the rest.

Can anyone recommend a good place to go so I know what the hell is going on in MGS5? All this talk of Paz and Cipher in Ground zero made very little sense to me and Id no connection with them.

Should I care who This Zero/Cipher fella is all that much?

It's hard to care about any characters as badly written as the Metal Gear ones. There's loads of story recap videos online at the moment that'll go over what you remember, what you don't and what you never knew.

    Here's a Eurogamer one that's about 12 mins long:

There's more in dept ones out there, but you only really need the get the basics. My advice is to not think too hard on the story and let it wash over you. The moments of baffling insanity are where most of the fun comes from. :D

Don't mind him Joe..... play MGS4

It will literatelly depreciate your hype foe MGSV, it is so so bad. Worst writing in a game ever. From start to finish. Nonsensical. The start of the whole nanomachines nonsense. And rampant, hugely offensive misogyny.
Meryl will literally plan her wedding during a high stakes shoot-out. You have been warned.

Also with 7 days to go no time really. Better off taking on Peace Walker, 4 is barely connected.

It is a long winded piece of fan service but it's not a worse written game than any other mgs, you have to suspend disbelief in the mgs universe. Mgs4 isn't as good as people wanted it to be but it is still a fine game even with its many imperfections. You can't really find fault with an mgs game for being daft and or ott, it's a game series about a soldier taking on huge robots single handedly ffs, and it's made in Japan by a slightly nutty guy who gives you porno mags to distract enemies with.

Things did go nuts from MGS2 on but I don't think its fair to lump Solid 1 in there with the rest them. There were paranormal elements in 1 but they were grounded in reality far more and thus required less suspension of disbelief. Even the wackiness of Psycho Mantis was influenced by real Russian experimentation into psychic warfare.

At the end of mgs1 you single handedly destroy a giant robot piloted by your twin brother, who is also a clone of a guy called big Boss, sorry you actually have a bit of help from a friend you killed previously who is now a robot ninja. Reality has little business interrupting this universe.

Agreed. It's let down by trying to do way too much with the story and over explaining things, but the core game play is pretty great. It has some fantastic cutscenes and action sequences, the game play is varied, some great weapons to unlock, and some of the fan service (if you're a fan) is worth all the negative points. The entirety of Act 4 made everything else worth it for me.

It definitely ranks low on most peoples' "Best MGS games" list and probably rightfully so. But it's by no means a bad game.

The story and writing were rubbish but I could forgive that if it was actually fun. Half the game and the boring cutscenes were not fun.

Central America was ok. But about 20 minutes of gameplay. Low point was undoubtedly Eastern Europe. And listening to the weapons dealer drone on was goddawful.

The gameplay mechanics were sound, although the chance to have fun with them were limited. I had lots of fun once I had unlocked all the extras which in effect turn the game into a toy box to torment enemies in, like all the previous installments.

They made such a nice engine, many weapons, tools and strategies to use, octo-camo... but in the end only really had like 2 large areas where you could implement them to their full potential. And even those area were very short if you knew what you were doing. MGS4 had the worst gameplay:cut-scene ratio for me.

I felt it was missing all the toys to have fun with. All the weapons seemed the same only differing in RoF or damage output where in the earlier games the inventory was limited but each weapon was unique, had a purpose and was fun to use. The range of gadgets you could use was a massive step back as well from previous instalments other than octocamo which went some way to making camo less aggravating. Maybe it opened up a bit when you got more gadgets (the solar weapon based on the excellent Boktai games that Kojima created sounded like a blast) but once was enough for me to go through that game.

I agree to an extent but the fun was there even if you did have to dig a bit first. It's not a bad game on a par with something as dreadful as assassin's Creed 3 where the hype was in no way justified. The gameplay was excellent, and perhaps the frustration people cite at not having enough opportunities to enjoy within the constraints of the story are in some way a testament to how good it actually was.

While I avidly dislike the game, there were lots of options for stealth or going loud. And the dolls were a lot of fun. Granted that's pretty much New Game+ territory.

EDIT: Just confirmed on twitter, no map app compatibility with PC version.

Aside from the solar gun, there were dolls you could use to control soldiers (the dolls Screaming Mantis used), a sniper rifle that created mini-tornados, and different types of tranquilizer ammo that made soldiers react in different ways. Plus then you also have the capabilities of the barrel, Mk.II etc.

There's no doubt that game play was very restricted from Act 3 onwards, but the first two acts could be a lot of fun on subsequent playthroughs.

    Also share tweet, pls.

Can't post the tweet (as I'm on mobile), but check @konamieu Saw a tweet saying the companion app was for PS4, XB1 and PS3. Didn't say no 360 or PC, but pretty purposefully didn't mention them either.

Checked the tweet. Yeah all but confirms that it doesn't have the app support. And so goes my hope of dual-screening it. What a load of ****.

There were also 24 different hand-guns, 18 different shotguns, etc, most of which felt exactly the same.

There is a decent game in MGS4 and I did get a lot of fun out of it in the first couple of years that I had it. The first two chapters are great, I personally loved chapter four although understand why others don't. It is also the only game I've managed no kills/no alerts and less than four hours game time.

There was just too many overly long cut-scenes though. There's that run between the end of chapter three and start of chapter four where you literally have 90+ minutes of cut-scenes broken up by a bike chase and straight-forward boss fight. It is just too much.

Agreed, but the same can largely be said for MGS3, which also didn't have the same degree of special weapons or items. Aside from the Patriot having infinite ammo, all the sub-machine guns felt the same to me in MGS3.

Definitely agree with that. The first two chapters are great, and really showcase what MGS4 had to offer. Act 3 was just on-the-rails, even trailing the guy felt mundane. Act 4 was fan service (though I don't complain about that). Act 5 was just way too short on gameplay and far too heavy on cutscenes.

Again though, I don't think all that qualifies it as a bad game, as I had tons of fun playing through it multiple times. It's flawed, but what it does good, it does really good.

Hated that bit at the end of MGS4 when you had to button mash like a mad yoke. I won't spoil it but anyone who's played it will know what I'm taking about.

Yeah, it's a pain. It's supposed to be an ordeal though, I think what Kojima was going for there was to have the player feel a share of snake's exhaustion.

Some UK places have already dispatched the game cos of the bank holiday in england on monday, lucky bastards

I wish gamesnash were still around. Would probably have it on Monday.

Not trying to circumvent stuff to get things cheaper, but I have the game digitally pre-ordered and already installed on my X1. If I change my region to Australia would I be able to play it at 15:01 on Monday? Anyone know?

EDIT: A quick google says this is possible, sweet.
