Just rescued a dude from the heavily guarded supply outpost, i had been stealthing a lot so decided to assault this one.

Sniped everyone outside then ran to the bridge and let 4 run past killed them then moved around the back whilst those inside all pointing towards the gate and got on the AA cannon :D:D

Fairly sure thats why that AA gun is in that exact position.

I got an A and a Doberman

Why oh why did I attempt to extract an enemy inside a building using fulton.

Unlocked the air bombardment. I prefer the stealth approach to try and increase the motherbase staff but I have to say it's great craic blowing the living ****e out of goons. Dem rag doll physics.

Regarding staff allocation, is everyone manually assigning or using the auto assign function? I choose to auto assign and it does a balanced job, both my R&D and Support are Level 7, but kinda sucks that for some of the better weapons/items, my R&D team needs to be a much higher level. Is it normal for it to be so low? I'm about 3 hours in and doing a tonne of side ops and fultoning pretty much everyone.

Also, I think it's hilarious how staff morale is raised by going back to Mother Base and kicking the living **** out of your solders :p They seem to take great honor in getting slapped around the place by Big Boss!

Auto should be fine for almost all of the game unless you need someone with a specific skill in a team or unit that isn't their strongest skill.

I've decided neither me nor herself is going to have the will to play through this again any time soon to go for the all S rank and the ridiculous requirements for all key items so she's been given the go ahead to go into every mission John Rambo

Any tips for capturing soldiers for mothership, should i only have a certain amount of one typ?, when i interrogate a solider he tells me there's a specialist in the area, but i can never tell or find whos the specialist, i have loads of people at mothership but afraid i've too much of the same person. Cheers.

Once you're told who's a specialist you should check your map, a little yellow icon (new information) appears beside one or more of the soldiers positions. They're the specialist. Although what skills they have you usually won't find out until you extract them unless you have your scope maxed out.

    Just got the ability to
control the weather via support team....
    This should make things fun

Wow the reasoning for Quiet being half naked is possibly the most ridiculous thing I've seen in metal gear.

Loving this game so much! By far the best in the series.

Although I'm only a few missions in!

I'm not fond of the auto assign function. Every now and then I gotta select a crap load of low-rank soldiers in bulk whose only 'skill' is causing trouble and sending people to sickbay. I swear there's like dozens of these types in your ranks if you don't weed em' out.

Just like Peace Walker you also start having to up the standards after a while. I think C rank is my minimum now. I only keep non Cs around if they have skills specific to that field or reduce fights among the staff. Just like PW I'm managing it all over again so it's nothing new to me, honestly.
Sad to find out I can't shoot Quiet in my own time at MB. Did manage to take her out in her boss fight with tranq sniper rifle I prioritised staff placement to be able to make so got an S on that mission.

Anyone else only doing story missions as snake? Again like PW I find it funner to go in as one of your combat staff. Balaclava FTW. Doing all the side ops, resource gathering like that. The dude I'm playing as has a sprint boost so he's amazing for going from cover to cover when things get hot or when I need to flee under too much fire to call D-Roach.

Here's a picture of him after work.

Playing last night i only did 4 side ops while just sending combat units on missions. They're bringing back a load of staff, resources and a ton of gmp. I really need to do mission 9 10 and 11 so i can start v my fob. Anyone do it yet and yet invading?

    Couldn't get online anytime yesterday.

Loving it so far. Only a couple of hours in, about 2 missions past the prologue, and have a couple of questions on some mechanics. Sorry if they've been answered already.

    1) what's the deal with the hidden secondary objectives? First mission I didn't have an interpreter so didn't interrogate anyone, 2nd mission I could interrogate but they only told me where ammo etc was. Also, objectives seem to contradict each other. For example in Episode 3 one is to eliminate the commander while another is to extract him. So it's impossible to do all objectives and they're designed for multiple playthroughs? Does that mean your ranking is not dependent on secondary objectives?

    2) I'm unclear on what impact free roam has on missions, if any. For example if i attack a fort in free roam and destroy its comms and anti air gear, and then do a mission involving the same fort, will all that gear still be destroyed at the start of the mission or is it all rebuilt? Also, I'd attacked and destroyed the Eastern comms station in free roam and destroyed all the equipment there, but then the episode 4 mission was to go and destroy that same equipment

What's supposed to happen after uploading GZ save data? I got my sneaking suit but none of the people I extracted.

I am thinking of selling the game when finished. Not really into it. I'm hating the desert stuff. I have no clue what the story is??

    1. They are for replayability so v you only see a full list after clearing a mission so you'll go back and try get them all. Extracting an enemy is the same as eliminating them as you're taking them out of the battlefield.

    2. Yeah that stuff is mostly for your current mission like stopping reinforcements being called, etc. Unlocking a heli landing zone stays there though.

They get drip fed to you. Every couple of main missions i get a 'remember this guy you saved 9 years ago? He's joining diamond dogs to fight with you. '

Yeah I got a couple after completing the next mission. Hideo is pretty handy!

Is their any benefit to blitzing the side ops before hitting the main missions? I've completed 2 main missions but 6 side ops. Have Russian interpreter now.

Some have handy MB staff or blueprints to unlock new items and weapons. I'd recommend doing a mix of both, depending on what the side ops missions are.

Thanks. When I did that eliminate mission I executed the commander. If I replayed the mission and extracted him instead would I get him back in mother base, or would the first, lethal, result stick?

I was wondering this myself! Might try it later on and see what happens!

So are there any other doors to enter in Motherbase other than the blue one on the infirmary deck?

Leave reflex mode on and take your time. Make sure the area is clear.

Once D-Dog has grown up, he'll help a lot in spotting people around you.

You mean just extracting and re-deploying? That's what I always do when somethings around 3000-4000m away. I've been wanting to just fly over it all without a load screen like you can in MB.

Speaking of that... what is up with these load screens? There's a bit too many, honestly. Lots of cutscenes are not happening without load screens before and after! What happened to the seamless gameplay-cutscene transition. It's rare. At least the load screens themselves are super fast... at least on my system.

Yeah it's difficult enough. Make use of long ranged silent weapons and try get your aim damn good so you can land headshots very quickly. Mark as many as you can, take them out in an order that won't get them seeing each other go to sleep/die, destroy communications arrays. Overall be a little more aggressive is a way I've found that compliments stealth half of the way. Being able to handle yourself if/when you're spotted is just as important as sneaking well imo. I've upped my sneaking game recently though! Even in action there's an element of stealth because they can easily lose track of you and you can start taking them out silently (I prefer CQC) one at a time as they're all marching around looking for you. I'm not a purist (never was, never will be) with 100% stealth. Seems like a restrictive way of playing that's not that rewarding and also just doing it for the sake of meta or what players think is the best way is not a good way to play games like MGS and similar (hitman). They provide a lot of offensive weapons and resources... I say use em'!

Air support is a great way to divide their attention when you get trapped or overwhelmed by high caliber weapons. Plenty of times I've been confined to an interrior with dozens of guys closing in (and jumping away from grenades they throw in!). Summoning a heli messes them all up so you can pop back out and start tranq/killing them again. Usually lowers their numbers enough for you to make an exit.

Anyone notice you can counter melee attacks from enemies now? In 3 and 4 you'd just get stabbed like an idiot but using the CQC action just as they attack you can see your character counter the knife! I had a Shield v Shield fight. The dude kept getting closer shooting mine and finally went in for a knife which I countered. Good stuff.

Smoke Grenades FTW. Marking groups of enemies then smoking them makes it super easy to run in and CQC them all with large combos! The sneaking suit is great for damage reduction and silently moving fast while crouched for marching enemies that you need to grab with potentially more of them in front. Its camo index isn't that great though, obviously.

Regarding side ops, is there certain prerequisites to make them appear? Are some miss-able? I'm doing a tonne of side ops but plan on going back to main missions soon, if I was to leave side ops alone until the end of the game, would I still be able to do all 50 of them? Doing side ops seems to unlock more side ops, so just wondering how exactly they work.

Also, does the story pick up soon? I'm only 3 main missions in but apart from rescuing Kaz the story hasn't really taken off  There's been no plot devices so far apart from the
skull dudes I encountered in the desert
. Am I too early in the game to complain or does the story actually pick up? Always loved MGS games for their stories so hopefully this one delivers :o

You get additional story parts after every 5 or so missions or sometimes when you return to Motherbase. Phantom Pain is the inverse of the usual MGS formula of 5 hours of gameplay with 15 hours of cutscene.

Side ops are unlocked by doing main missions, other side ops, and some by in game actions. You won't miss any by going through the main missions. There's also about 160 of them not 50.
