I'm always learning playing this game. I redid some of the missions where I got an E rank and with the right weapons at my disposal and playing more stealthily, I turned those E ranks into C ranks. Happy out :)

Do them quick, murder everyone and you'll probably get an S rank because speed is the thing with the heaviest points bonus attached to it.

Hey everyone, I'm only on mission 5 but was wondering how do I actually play online? I don't see any options for it. Do I need to unlock it?

You need to finish mission 22 to unlock FOB invasions and Metal Gear Online will be patched in next month.

    Ah I see! Thanks.
Do we know exactly how many main missions there are? I've played for 12 hours and a lot has just been messing about :o

As much as I enjoy this game, I do miss some of the cinematic indoor missions that the metal gear solid games had. Metal Gear Solid 3 has a nice number of indoor environments if I remember correctly.

Also bring back David Hayter for the next game please :)

There are 50 main mission but minor
14 of them are remixes of previous missions
    and 157 side ops.

No. Perfect Stealth and the secondary mission objectives have the heaviest bonus points attached to them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,160 ✭✭✭tok9

Exactly, speed has very little to do with it.

I'm in the middle of S ranking and doing all the side objectives in the main ops and you can get S ranks if you do the missions quickly without alerts or kills. But you really need to know exactly what you're doing. It's much easier to take your time and do a few side objectives which will compensate for any mistakes you make along the way.

Got an S rank on mission 10 a while a go and was shocked. Took me 30 minutes, took my time to get all the prisoners (transport specialist FTW!) Even killed a guy which i never do. No alarms and 3/5 mission tasks done. I'm glad you don't have to go running through a mission just to get S. Once i clear the game, I'll go back and try for S's but I'll definitely take them as they come.

PS, dem African boys are persistent mofo's!

I can't believe how many times I've been 100m from the chopper evacuating a mission and have run over the side of a cliff with D-Horse and have had to restart the mission :-(

Fight them in the airport and its sooo much easier.

One well timed airstrike and no tanks to worry about ;)

    Anyone tried the FOBs?

I've played 3-4 of them and only been successful the first time. 1 of the bases was ridiculous with drones and fully armoured soldiers while other times I just couldn't find the destination I needed to get to.

I can see it being a lot of fun but a hell of a challenge at the higher levels.

No. For now I'm just putting all my troublemakers on the security team and just have one fob platform with nothing worth stealing on it.

Yeah done about a dozen now even though I wanted to stay away originally. I got into it because someone invaded and I tried to retaliate but they defended and before I was even a few steps away from my spawn I got hit with a grenade launcher and died instantly. Turns out his base was pretty much as buff as they can get, too.

It's way harder than I ever expected it to be. There's honestly not enough places to go. The minute you're out of your spawn you're going to find a handful of soldiers waiting just off the staircase/pipe so you gotta take a while before you make a move which just gives the defender time to come in or if they're already in they've already got their super powerful long range weapon aimed and switching between the only 3 points of entry they know you'll be coming from. It feels a little impossible for the invader once the defender has any experience, honestly.

Right off you pretty much have to have a long-range weapon to 1v1 them and hopefully kill them just so you can start moving through the base. You have to crawl on the ground almost all the time because the enemies in FOB have much better eyes than the single player enemies and they also react to tranq'd soldiers further away and move quicker to any area. Marking them with generic zoom doesn't work as well you have to be pretty damn close to mark them. I think patience and strong 1v1 skill is the only way to beat it.

Also getting caught seems to mean a death sentence if the defnder is loaded in and knows what they're doing. It takes so long before the core door is open again after an alert which I highly doubt anyone is going to be able to spend actually hidden and gives the defender time to respawn if you've even managed to take them out.

That said, I've defended twice successfully and gotten to the core with perfect stealth whenever anybody doesn't come to defend so there's that. Much easier to defend than to invade.

TLDR: I suck and need a user-tutorial for FOB :pac:

You can choose the type of platform to build, which are the same as your Mother Base ones. So for example (because the game pretty much forced me to build something) I chose the central Command Platform, which doesn't have space for containers and barely has any weapon emplacements. But likewise if I'd chose the main Base Development platform as my starting point, chances are it'd put containers on it which people could steal. So all that's on my FOB are all my low-skilled troublemakers.

To be honest, spent f*ck all time looking into it. I thought going by the game play videos shown that you'd be able to customise your FOBs fully. Place pipes, vents, ladders wherever you chose. They said in the video that the defender would have the advantage because it's their base so they'd know the layout and how to move quickly through it. But it just seems to be straight copies of the Mother Base platforms, meaning everyone could easily learn how to move quickly through each type of platform, and you can only drop weapon emplacements and security defences in certain spots, and guards are placed automatically.

I doubt it'll be too long before there are YouTube videos to show how to move/steal from each type of platform without being caught, by which point the FOB mode will be broken beyond repair.

If it's the one im thinking of, fultan the truck out .... important you need to stay close to it until it takes off then hop in a tank and drive for the border. Take a second to bring up iDroid and set a way point and put the foot down.

I'm bored senseless of this now being honest. I would have preferred it wasn't as open and missions being more compartmentalised like GZ. Having to call in a chopper even to move struts on motherbase is a right pain at this point.

Chopper takes way too long. Use the cardboard box delivery, far quicker.

The Motherbase stuff is a bit overwhelming. So many weapons and and so much equipment and staff to deal with.

Been having great fun with them. Was successful with my first 6 or so, then went downhill a bit :pac: I've succeeded in 12, failed around the same. It's a bloody good challenge though, and a nice chance at S ranks if you succeed.

Security team aside, you still lose ~10 staff from whatever platform they invade. If its only the command platform then its random from every unit. Whereas if it was R&D, you'd lose ~10 R&D staff (at random).

To some extent. The resources they can steal are resources you wouldn't get without having a FOB anyway. Security team staff are whats on guard duty, but you will lose some staff from whatever platform is invaded.

Yup, agreed. However I did find that the more platforms it seems to get a little easier. There's only so many per platform then instead of having 35 to deal with on one platform.

Much better rewards for defending too. I got 1.2 million GMP and a few S rank soldiers from defending one invasion.

The only thing I can say that helps a lot is trying to mark everything from the helicopter using the binos.

Didn't even know you could do that. Doh. Marking enemies is harder in FOB because you need to zoom in more and non-binocular marking zoom has to be super close.

You haven't seen some of the platforms I have, then. Many many soldiers on every platform. It gets insane for the buffest of FOBs.

Anyone know if the FOB soldiers keep respawning? Like what if every soldier got killed or fulton'd. Would it truly be 1v1 then? Might be worth taking out at least half the soldiers via sniping if it can clear the ground for you to move around freely for stealth.

All I know is that FOB needs updates for sure. More complex FOB layouts, more places to hide and infiltration points.

My $.02, got 'S' this way pretty easily.
As was suggested above I hit them at the airport. Snuck around to the right when coming from the previous point, worked my way up to the 3 story tower with the snipers on it before even firing a dart. Before you get the snipers look over the far wall and you should see the truck, infantry and escort. Tranq the infantry, including anyone who runs out to check, this will insure the truck doesn't get driven off - leave them on the ground for now, then take the snipers on this bulding and fulton them out. Once they're out of the way work on any infantry that may have wandered over before hitting the 2 armoured escort vehicles from the roof - only fulton any that are not within about 40 feet of the truck.

Now here's the nasty part, if you care about role playing your character. Shoot the sleeping infantry near the truck, std bullets/no explosives....they can be animated by the Skulls and you can't fulton them before the cutscene. After that's done check again for any incoming infantry that heard the massacre. Once clear drop to the truck side of the building and sneak towards it. After the cutscene is initially done you should be able to sneak back towards the building doors, fire a rocket at one as you get there - but make sure to avoid near the truck as it is pretty flimsy. When you have their attention run through the building and on the left should be an AA gun...Skulls don't do well with one near point blank. You should be able to mow them all down without fear of harming the truck - 50k points for killing them. Then it's back to fulton it out. I also spent about an extra 10 mins collecting resources once it was done and still got 'S' so don't worry about time too much.

my problem with ep16 was just it was very contrary to how I'd played the game up to that point
did the airport way.. hopped a fence at the back of it and the truck was right in front of me unguarded. Fultoned immediately, skulls activated, and just ran away on the horse

very poor mission imo, and very immersion spoiling leaving the hotzone and stopping dead with skulls mid shot.. daft..

S rank for my trouble though

I don't know, you'd still have to be very skilled to get past a high level base even with a video walkthrough.

If anything the attacker needs a bit more advantage I would say.
