Should GAA players be pumping weights in the gym. as in 20, 21, 22 year olds playing club football. What do people think of putting them into gyms

Lot more to GAA than simply pumping weight - you don't really go into detail there about it at all, is there a certain programme the lads are following or is it a case of muddling along?

No harm getting stronger, but not at the expense of losing speed/mobility

Putting them doing weights alone doesn't simply mean they'll automatically become big units though, nutrition is major, they'll need be eating like horses to gain significant size, particularly protein.

Olympic lifting would be the best bet to get best results, squats, bench and deads etc. They'll need to be following a decent program

Personally not a fan of going into big weights. Friend of man very fast and fit but might also. Wants to go mad into the weights. I told him not to as he will lose speed. What are the best ways to get the right balance.

power work like already mentioned for sqauts dead lifts etc are the main along with cork.

correct instruction on weight training for legs is important as incorrect focus can lead to injuries.

'beach' weights will serve no purpose.

the myth that weights will slow you down is kinda blown out of the water when you consider the speed that the rugby players can go at.

Circuit training is the best way to train groups of lads for team sports. Mini circuits are best 3-5 exercises

Using dumbbells and body weight exercises and improving flexibility and some cardio wirk
A session could combine all of these...

Foam rolling - gets muscles warmed up and knots out of muscles.

Stretching - combo of dynamic and static

    Warm up -
    Squat jumps
    Woodchops
    Box jumps

    Exercised
    Chin ups
    Press ups
    Lunges
    Squats
    Dynamic core exercises

Finish off with some cardio - sprints, med ball throws off wall, whatever.

Clubs don't need to spend a fortune on equipment once they have a space to use - hall.
