RTÉ ONE HD on Sky

I have a new crazy theory...

I wonder if RTE are playing hardball. Sky pay the uplink and encryption costs for RTE. Maybe this agreement is up for renewal or doesn't stretch to include RTE One HD. By having this HD channel on other platforms, and plugging this fact, it puts pressure on Sky to carry it. Which gives a favourable advantage to RTE in any negotiations.

According to the chat over on the Sky Forum, there may be reason to be optimistic:

    'Soon' means nothing really.

RTE said this two months ago to the day...
RTE 1 HD will become available on the Sky platform in the future, but as yet no date has been confirmed. Please keep an eye on the Sky website. It will also be widely advertised when the time comes.

I emailed RTE directly and asked them the same question as to when RTE 1 hd would appear on Sky and they said that it would be coming very soon. And emphasised the word VERY in the email using bold font. So hopefully not to long now.

I think rte's definition of soon is not the same as most peoples. :pac:

Surely it's in their interest not to have competitors with better channel options for fear of subscribers jumping ship?

I dunno about that... If you're in a UPC area, I'd imagine you'd be with them for both TV and internet. If you are not in a UPC area then you'd probably be with Sky (if you have paid TV channels). So putting RTE 1 HD on their EPG isn't going to gain many more subscribers.

But people (like me) will cancel Sky and get RTE One HD via Saorview.

Why are you with Sky if your only interest is RTÉ

The vast, vast majority of people have Sky for reasons other than RTÉ. Whilst it would be a benefit to have RTÉ One in HD if it was the only reason for cancelling I have no idea why anyone is still with them.

In other words you (and people like you) would be in a very tiny minority.

I'm not with Sky. Cancelled it some months ago, mainly because I get more of the channels I do watch (RTE, BBC, ITV, C4) for free via Saorview/Freesat.

So people like you don't even have Sky

I read it as "people will do as he did and cancel Sky"

But they won't, that's the thing!

As I've said, if people are likely to cancel for no other reason than because there's no RTÉ One in HD then they don't have the service in the first place...

Horse for courses. I have Sky and also RTE 1 HD via Saorview (and incidentally 42E to 30W on FTA satellite). Trouble is I can't easily record, pause, schedule or series link anything on Saorview unless I buy the heap of 'something' called the Walker PVR. Erm no thanks. It's still €170 in Powercity and by all accounts struggled to cope with the hour change to summer time and can be a bit hit and miss with recordings/series links. I'd still require to spend another €250+ on a Freesat box, to get a similar offering to the one current box under my TV, that is family friendly, for the discounted rate I pay Sky.

If I did dump Sky then after 2 years I'd have broken even and then each month I've have started to save some money. But I have to weight it all up and compare functionality and ease of use against practicality and cost.

I bought a TV that can record Saorview and Freesat channels to a hard drive, with full 7 day EPG and series link. You are right though MBSnr, I wouldn't go near those Walker boxes or even a generic FTA receivers.

What's the TV make/model that offers that?

The Samsung F7000 & F8000 ranges have dual Freesat and Saorview tuners. They have a few other single tuner models also, not sure of the model numbers. They stock them all in Power City.

It's not perfect or as slick as Sky, but it works well and is reliable. Most importantly it has been adopted by the family because it is easy to use.

Samsung are aware of our unique situation in Ireland and hope to address some of the quirks they have with flipping between Freesat and Saorview with firmware updates.

Thanks. You know I'm going to say it :D but the base model comes in at €999. 4 yrs Sky subscription for me...

I can understand the outlay if you are starting out or upgrading the TV and dumping Sky. Something to bear in mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,987 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Correct. The F7000/F8000 are high end TVs. I would not recommend just going out and buying one as a Sky alternative.

    Anywhos... going off topic here...

You're absolutely right. Unless you want the sports pack (movies too old) there's no point when you can get Freesat. :)

Calm down everyone, there is no need to dump Sky or buy high end Samsung TVs, RTE1 HD will appear on Sky, that's a given, it's just a case of how long the wait will be. Sky want it to happen, RTE want it to happen, there appears to be some sort of posturing going on between the two of them, but it will happen.

I'm not annoyed at all, I just meant that people should be patient, RTE1 HD will appear on Sky, eventually ! And as a Sky subscriber myself, I genuinely hope it's sooner rather than later.

Any time I desperately feel the need to see RTE1 in HD, I switch inputs.

I think the problem may be that the "Irish transponder" could be full and a new one needs to be allocated for RTÉ1 HD (and eventually TG4 HD and even the mythical TV3 HD!)

This seems to the issue as TV3 confirmed "transponder space" being an issue for them when planning for the Rugby World Cup in HD.

Solution is send the stream to the UK for multiplexing, encryption and transmission via another transponder. This would cost money. Or, they could hold out to see if Sky pay for RTE to have more transponder space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,987 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Not sure what the capacity of a transponder is, but on King of Sat the TV channels on this transponder are using 340 Mbps in total.

I think that figure is wrong, 65 Mbps for an SD channel and 13 for RTÉ2 HD?

The capacity on the main page for that transponder is 33.8 Mbps - http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-28.2E.php

    Shouldn't that be 34Mbps

I think The solution is change the symbol rate of the irish transponder to 27500 and that should give 42 mpbs of space then there will be enough room for rte one hd maybe rte cant uplink to more than one transponder from montrose at one time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,987 ✭✭✭JDxtra

I wonder why can't 2RN have a resilient network link to Sky HQ, where the Irish channels could be multiplex and slotted in to any transponder?

I guess that depends on what arrangement the various channels have with Sky. RTÉ do the multiplexing for Saorview and 2RN do the transmission, not sure what arrangement there is between Sky and 2RN, if any.

Money ! Surely sky will want RTE 1HD. The arrangement will come down to the deal that RTE feel happy with from sky ?
I think they are holding out to get a good deal out of sky seen as they already have RTE 2 HD it seems mad sky would not want it as soon as possible.
RTE are not losing much by not having HD on sky otherwise it would of been the first choice to promote the content saorview first than the nations biggest satellite provider. ?

The ball is in Sky's court on this, as per the Broadcasting Act RTÉ "must offer" its channels to all platforms here but unlike UPC there is no "must carry" requirement on Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭formerly scottish paddy

maybe rte cant uplink to more than one transponder from montrose at one time
I don't think that is a problem, suitable kit would be available. Uplinking from Donnybrook is the cheapest option, renting "international" circuits to London for uplinking would be expensive and perhaps not as resiliant.

I think The solution is change the symbol rate of the irish transponder to 27500

You need a wider bandwidth transponder to do that.

Problem is it's not sending the first Irish man to the moon they are doing it's simply adding a HD channel to the setup, surely a window of 2 months or so can be given, surely it's fairly normal day to day going on by now.

It now looks that RTE1 HD, RTE+1 and RTE NN will arrive on SKY sometime after February 2016 according to satellite changes form. It seem abit odd when RTE say it will be available in a matter of days according to its encyclopaedia. We may not have it for Xmas.

    Google RTE1 HD
Go to RTE1- Wikipedia the free encyclopaedia
Stroll down to articles RTE1 HD, RTE+1 click on thesis for info.
Next go back a page, click on Forthcoming changes to digital platforms (Uk & Ireland) - Tv.
This is where I get 90% of my information
I hope this explanation is good enough.
