Does any one know what the situation is regarding setting up a stall in any of the various locations around the County?

If you want to sell vegetables or cakes etc do you have to get a license? Is there a fee?

Does it entitle you to operate all around the county or are there different set ups in different towns? I assume you need a license to operate out of the Saturday market at the top of Shop Street?

thanks.Actually that link applies to Galway City but I was able to do a bit of a search and I can see that there are also license fees for casual trading in other places around the County as well (Ballinasloe for example - http://www.ballinasloe.ie/en/CouncilServices/CasualTrading/).

It is just curiosity on my part.

Hello, there is an annual fee, per pitch for county council market sites. There are a few available in Athenry town for example(my mates trade there). It depends on the size of the site, you might pay €300 per year for example (to the county council). You'll also need traders insurance which you can get from MAST for about €200+ pa.

If you're selling food you'll also need some HSE inspection. (fruit &Veg selling is covered by different laws)

Some traders buy a few pitches and do two or three markets a week around the place, but they do take commitment. You can't just do the fine days and summer months, you have to be there up to 46 weeks per year (6 weeks off), but I don't know how strictly that's inforced. It get's cold and tough and takes months to build regular shoppers. I think however it's a great way to do business and it's affordable (if you're a hardy buck)
