We couldn't afford a car til I was a teenager. It was disappointing really because I was car mad :pac:

He got a Nissan micra eventually and has only had nissans since. My mam didn't drive til a few years ago as she was terrified. She though she couldn't handle gears so I bought her a cheap old automatic to spin around in, she turned out a good driver! She passed her test without a single mark on the test sheet :)

There was a Nissan Bluebird with no dashboard, just a mass of wires, and a really really old Land Rover with a hole in the floor that a small child could easily fall out of.
Needless to say I lashed myself in good and proper in that yoke :D

Oh and my mam had a little brown mini that you couldn't drive if it was raining out. It lost the plot at the slightest sign of a puddle :pac:

Old lad always drove Jags and dressed like someone out of the Rat pack. He was waay cooler than me. I look like a ragamuffin compared to him. He even wore hats..I can't imagine even owning a trilby, let alone wearing one.

I always wondered why the fathers had the big cars, which they drove to their workplace and parked up all day, and the mothers had the teeny tiny cars, which they used to do the mega-shopping and ferrying a huge number of kids (not always only their own kids) around the place all the time.

First car was a Wolsley, then Austin Maxi, then vans of one description or another that we sat in back of, on tool boxes or wherever you could sit without being stabbed by a chisel or the like. I remember the 3 plus hours drive with us in back, to go to seaside for the day, 4 of us and dog puking everywhere. Grim.

My dad once had this Morris Mini Minor.

It was really old and if you scratched it, you could see all the colours under the sun that it had been painted before.

The backseat was also dodgy. If we went over a bump, it would come out of the screws.

Man that car was an embarrassment. What was he thinking?????

I don't see my dad anymore.

My dad hasn't owned a car in about 20+ years I think. Has got a company car, and in that time I'm pretty sure he's had hundreds of cars as it seems to change every month or two.

Nothing but Renaults, ever. There was the lime green metallic 20 with the orange sunroof, which was the height of style in the 80s. There was a few 25s including the one with nearly a quarter of a million miles on it, that he drove us all to Barcelona in. Another one of them went around France about 8 times. My Mam had a 4 with a plastic bag in the roof to stop the water coming in. Her 19 was my first car. At the moment the family are driving a collection of safranes, meganes, clips and assorted other models. Complete brand loyalty.

And if you ever need to break down on the continent, break down in a Renault. There will be a garage ten minutes away.

In the mis 80's my mam drove an old escort. The drivers door didn't close properly so we had a system where whoever sat behind her had to hold onto the belt of an old dress of hers that was tied to the door handle. You had to hold on really tight going around corners.
I don't remember thinking anything strange of this until one day we were out driving and I was in the back, I gave my mam cheek over something (I was 13) and she turned around to hit me and in the process dislocated her shoulder. We were on a dangerous corner and she was shouting in agony so long story short, the fire brigade were called and a fireman said he'd drive us kids home. I had to explain to him our door system and he absolutely broke his ****e laughing.

Well, as for my late Dad. After a couple of bockety old 100Es and such, there was this, a Ford Zephyr Six:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2e/1964_Ford_Zephyr_Six_MK_III_Saloon_FCH901.jpg

Then, a couple of these. The 100LS, the last properly cool Audi:

    http://www.audi4life.com/images/Audi/100/Audi_100_LS_0.jpg

A couple of these, Ford Granada Mk. I with the 2-litre Pinto engine:

And one of these, a Ford Granada Mk. II 2.8i Ghia, featuring the mighty Cologne V6:

Things got a bit boring after he retired - a perfectly hideous old diesel Jetta, couple of late-model Escorts, Hyundai Accent, yadd-yadda. ;)

My Dad bought a Lada in 1988. In my youthful innocence I thought it was the bees knees! It was white (long before white was fashionable), it had wipers on the headlights, a fancy radio cassette... it was fully loaded!! Back then you could drive around your new car for months on end with no reg plates. It still had no reg plates when my mother crashed it. It was repaired and put back on the road but after that things started to go really pear shaped. I think the day the ignition caught fire and when he had to tie the doors closed with rope was the final straw. He ended up getting most of his money back and went out and bought....... another Lada!
The 2nd one did a mostly reliable 50,000 miles if I recall correctly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

My parents split up when I was 14, I've no idea what my dad drove.
My mom never drove and my dad would have the car at work all day, so I essentially grew up without car... I never considered it a necessity. Well, until I moved to Ireland, that is.

    My parents didn't drive.

My friend's Da had a 2CV with faux fur seat covers and wacky rear view mirror accessories and I always prayed that it would come to light that he was actually my real father and I could go and live with them.

2 Skoda Estelles (a beige 'un and a sky blue 'un)
A Yugo that had a Fiat engine
    2 Lada Estates (both white)

Both the Ladas ended up getting nicked. :(

And me Mam. The first yoke I remember she had was a green Fiat 127:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Fiat_127_green.jpg

This thing had an oddball gearshift linkage that was prone to wear and I remember her swearing profusely at it when it wouldn't go into first on cold, wet mornings when she'd run me back the road to school. She used words I didn't think she knew! :D

Next, a rather tidy 1.3l Mk. II Escort:

    http://media2.turbosport.co.uk/2008/6/2008081211351167802Zetec Mk2 Escort 3.jpg

...followed by an early-model VW Golf:

There followed various uninteresting Fiestas, followed by a Seat Cordoba:

Yeah, I remember when everyone laughed at Ladas too. I laughed too, though I had no real idea what I was laughing at. They'd call them skips with engines and the like. All I'm sure of is that it would have meant a lifetime of slagging if your Dad bought one.

We were out in the sticks incidentally, only had a vague idea what Ladas actually looked like.

Yep. The car even came with a ridiculously huge toolkit in the boot! Those Ladas were based on a 1960's Fiat that the Russians bought the rights to. So in the late '80's at the height of their popularity here, it was effectively a 30 year old car!

Mmm. The Skoda 120 "Estelle" was probably worse back around 1988 or so. At least the Lada was very "Russian" and industrial. Back then, the only people who bought a Skoda were pathologically tight Yorkshiremen who wouldn't spend Christmas nor give you the steam off their piss. And I know - I had a couple of uncles/granduncles-in-law matching the above description! :D:D:D
