But very disappointing match no doubt about it.

Was expecting a fierce battle, hell for leather, but we got a tedious, borefest to put it frankly

Not that I'd blame Utd- they did what they had to do to be fair.

From an Arsenal perspective, they are still top of the league in fairness, but looked gutless. That's surely a worry. I was really expecting them to grab the game by the balls and show everyone they meant business.

I wouldn't panic just yet but a few more showings like this and they could fade quite quickly.

This weekend has been strange to say the least though, City and Chelsea failing to win was mad

I do still think one of them will be lifting the trophy in May however...

the Dortmund game took a lot out of the Arsenal players, add that to the virus that has been going round the squad and the performance was not that surprising really. Still could have pinched a draw though.

Then who if neither of these? Its not like any other side are really pulling up trees. You'd imagine sooner rather than later someone will grab the league by the cajones and stamp authority

I'd probably side with City in that when they're on they look very hard to stop. They're the best team in the league IMO and if they can win everything at home, all they need to do is find some away form and they could be the ones to beat

It probably won't take a massive amount to win it

Chelsea too can't be ruled out, I can see them picking up a few dirty 1-0's and the like around March/April when it's in the melting pot

    League wide open now

very much doubt the first sentence and absolute no reason for us to keep quiet. Still top of the league and we still beat Liverpool and Dortmund in the last week.

As to the 2nd very true and it was the case before the game too,

    Maybe!

I'd still be disappointed in them though. Even if they played a big game yesterday, you'd still expect them not to be giving away possesion so sloppily

It's still not a bad week, I mean beating Liverpool was a good win, and the Dortmund result was huge

And just like that United are ahead of City and only a point off Chelsea. Good weekend.

We're second in the title race :pac:

His going to CB coincided with the end of our good play tbf. He was very good

We were pretty poor. Not sure how much to read into the "virus" being talked about, but I'd certainly say our performance suffered a bit from the week's exertions. Rooney was excellent.

Disappointing goal to lose to, but overall can't complain too much about the result. No cutting edge, and Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey/Arteta were muck.

Sagna played well, the only bright point.

Season really looks as open as it has for a long time. Utd also have had most of the tough games already, so are in a good spot. City need to find some away form if they're to get anywhere. Chelsea dropping silly points too.

We really need to be up for it next week, Southampton will be no pushovers.

He was very good defensively. Pressed and won the ball superbly. His energy was clearly missed in the second half.

Was bad alright. Lot of direct football from Manu and Arsenal weren't at the races in the final 3rd.

Utd had more fight in them today.

Said it all along but the flak Moyes is getting is a joke. Instaed of questioning every single team selection Moyes makes, supporters would be better off getting behind the manager. Just like Liverpool fans found with Rodgers, not all managers can simply take the reigns and have the team delivering instantly. As long as United are there or thereabouts in the New Year, you are going to see a more resilient team in the run in.

It was more frustrating than anything else. You knew at halftime Moyes would try to, ahem, see it out and Arsenal reverted to the same bad old Arsenal.

Smalling was immense in that second half. Looked every bit the player I'm expecting him to eventually be on a regular basis, even out of position.
His reading and decision making was first class.

I thought he did okay too. He did the job of a centre back playing in centre midfield. Nothing special.

You know we can support the manager AND criticise some of his team selections? It's not mutually exclusive and a fairly simplistic way of looking at things.

2 things on this, maybe better for the United thread

    - Moyes took over a team in a very different position to Rodgers so not comparable at all.

    - I fully support Moyes but that doesn't mean we cant question some of the things he does. His subs are still not good for example. In fairness, we said the same things about Fergie too

We can play all the pretty football in the midfield, but still get no result up front. Giroud on his own is not enough. A set piece goal in the end that done us. It should be a wake up call now for Arsenal, that its going to take much better than today's performance to be competing with the rest, for the title.

Most of the top 4 clashes in England are negative affairs and have been for a long time as both teams are usually afraid of losing.

Not too sure what to make of the league, the usual suspects of Chelsea, City and Utd are slipping up. Spurs have been unexpectedly poor, whereas teams like Southampton and Liverpool have been unexpectedly good.

    May it continue.

strange season so far but I fully expect the top 4 to be the same as last season.

Arsenal and Liverpool are in the best form they've been in in years and there's still only a 4/5 point gap between them and United and Chelsea.

It'll be interesting if the form swaps around and Arsenal and Livepool can stay within 4/5 points of the top just like United and Chelsea are doing now.

Utd finished about 30 points ahead of liverpool last season. They shouldn't be behind them at this stage if the season. Utd must be favourites for the league at this stage.

We've just got a new manager whereas Liverpool have stability for the first time in a while and its really showing.

I didn't expect liverpools terrific start but I did expect them to be a lot better than last year simply due to Rogers being a good manager IMO.

In fairness United are only that close due to bad form from the other teams, Arsenal excluded. The way the league is with some pretty high quality players at the likes of Southampton (that late draw could come back to haunt United), Cardiff and WBA with some good young squads like Villa capable of causing the top teams problems like never before, it looks like it could be difficult to put a big run together without being caught out bymsome of these guys.

Also, when has Jones played bad enough to warrant the criticism he gets from some United fans? He faded in his first season but his style of play is to give his all for 90 minutes sofatigue isn't an unexpected occurance surely and he was fantastic against Madrid and until the red card was nullifying Ronaldo of all people.

With it looking so close this year, European competion could be a telling factor. United (and Swansea) were the only teams to win this weekend after being in Europe mid-week. Looking good for Liverpool and Southampton if that's the case.

The performance that proves nothing has changed.

In the last 26 combined games against Manchester United and a Mourinho managed Chelsea he has won the grand total of........one ! That one was a game where United had already as good as sealed the title and were on their holidays

If you want a manager to give you the predictable glory of 4th, stick with There's Only One Arsehole Wenker. If you want to dare any try something a bit different like actually winning games you're not expected to, and picking up a shiny silver thing once in a while, try something different

An abject, pathetic, tip tap surrender against the most mediocre United team in years. Barely a shot on target.

The 8-2 will forever be a scar that this manager and team can not remove, and why he should have done the honourable thing that day and packed it all in

  • Registered Users Posts: 629 ✭✭✭PurpleSt4in

that was an awful awful standard... for a game between reigning champions and league leaders that is shocking. United's defence was spot on and never let Arsenal play their style of football. Phil Jones getting MOM tells the whole story of the game really... The reigning champions tactics, at home, were to shut out the away side... so negative.
