Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The big BBC Four feature this Friday night is

Elvis: That's Alright Mama 60 Years On

but tucked away on Film4 that night is at 23.05

Mistaken for Strangers - the premiere of Tom Berninger film about his big brother Matt’s band, The National.

Last night's Mick Ronson documentary on BBC Radio 2 was excellent - highly recommended.

Nice one, I was one of a select few who saw The National at Oxegen '11 while the plebs went off to watch Beyonce

Sweet, unlike the TV iplayer the BBC Radio iplayer is available in Ireland free and legal, no jiggery pokery needed. Looking forward to giving it a listen

'Guth' is being repeated, Thursdays at 10.15pm on TG4. It's "The story of popular music and how the families of Irish emigrants changed the genre"

It starts off with Bing Crosby, then features John Lydon, Stephen Morrissey and Johnny Maher from The Smiths, Dusty Springfield, John Lennon and Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis. John Lydon's show is very good, I missed most of the others.

Boo-urns. This is a weak week for BBC music, everything is swamped by the Commonwealth Games.

Ah well, there's always Youtube. Anyone got a recommendation for Youtube Music Doc? - I might give these two a rewatch soon, lovely stuff

Not beebrock really, but if you want a bit on the history and development of music, youtube Howard Goodall's Story of Music. Might not be of interest to those of you that are in the mood for rockin.

Of definite interest is his one about Lennon & Macca's songwriting. It should be there in it's entirety. Think i'll give it a go later (again).

Edit: Howard Goodall's 20th Century Greats - Lennon & McCartney

Nice one Donie, I've seen a few of Howard Goodall's shows and he's a master of explaining the workings of music.

Coincidentally, I picked up one of his books in a second hand shop last week

    http://www.djhistory.com/books/big-bangs-the-story-of-five-musical-discoveries-that-changed-musical-history-howard-goodall-20

Looking forward to getting stuck into that. I just need to finish all the books I have started, and then I'll get to it. It'll probably be 2017, but I'll get there!

Just finished watching 'More Than This - The Roxy Music Story' on YouTube, broken down into a few parts.

With an intro by Bono :O

    Wow, looks good!

Wanted to get the Story of Music book in Easons a while back. Will get it sometime. (And that one now that i know it exists :-) )

Rock 'n' roll...it'll never catch on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Sonny Curtis from The Crickets there.

He wrote I Fought The Law, which was a huge hit for The Clash.

I'm pleased that Buddy Holly and The Clash are so closely linked. You can shake it up and make it louder, but it's still Rock n Roll.

Just discovered this station tanks to this thread, recorded Deep Purple in Rock yesterday, looking forward to that one.

Liked the Rainbow one last week but couldn't understand how they gave 4/5 for Down to Earth (fair enough) but gave 5/5 to Straight between the eyes.
