Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tony Blackburn still presents Pick Of The Pops on BBC Radio 2 every Saturday afternoon.
With the same music intro (At The Sound Of The Swinging Cymbals since you ask).

Just thought you ought to know.

Great show, always tune in :)

Love his cheesy intros to the records, as if the singer is answering his question :D

    Seriously....

    Bryan Ferry was a róthar.

    Sorry lads. He was.

Did I spot Jimmy Savile sneaking into the shot there?

Forget I said anything, The Daily Mail will demand all TOTPs are deleted in case it ever happens again.

I was right, someone was offended by seeing a nano-second of Savile in the corner of the shot. Sooner or later the schedulers will decide its not worth the hassle of checking the old shows, and will stop the repeats.
The BBC has apologised for airing an excerpt from a 1971 edition of Top of the Pops in which disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile was briefly shown.

Shown on 13 September on BBC Two, the footage appeared to show Savile wagging a finger at a female audience member.

"Unfortunately this brief appearance was missed," said the BBC after seven viewers complained.

"It was removed from iPlayer as soon as we were made aware and replaced with a re-edited version."

The footage of Savile, who died in 2011, was seen around 2315 BST in an edition of Top of the Pops 2.

The Mail probably set the video for every TOTP and show that uses the TOTP archives.

    Friday BBC4

8pm - Sound of Cinema: The Music
The Big Score Neil Brand celebrates the art of the film soundtrack by exploring the work of movie composers and demonstrating their techniques. He begins by looking at how the classical orchestral score emerged, and investigates how its popularity remains strong today. He sheds light on the 1930s European composers such as Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who brought their Viennese training to Hollywood for movies including King Kong and The Adventures of Robin Hood, and how it took an American talent to produce a darker, more modern sound. He also meets film-maker Martin Scorsese and composer Hans Zimmer to discuss their work

Midnight - Oh! You Pretty Things: The Story of Music and Fashion
Idols The second episode focuses on the 1970s, which was a time of political, social and cultural upheaval in Britain, reflected best in the music and fashion throughout the decade. On Top of the Pops, Suzi Quatro unleashed her leather jumpsuit into viewers' living rooms as `the rock chick look' was born, while the fantastical world of prog rock saw its golden-caped leader Rick Wakeman gaining an army of intellectual followers. And as Queen rocked the stage in Zandra Rhodes-designed costumes, the international phenomena of punk began - and some say ended - with the Sex Pistols. Narrated by Lauren Laverne

    Friday BBC2

Featuring contributions by founder members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh and producer Martin Rushent

11.40pm - Young Guns Go For It: Bananarama
Popular trio Bananarama, whose independent attitude and string of worldwide hits made them the most successful girl group of the 1980s. With contributions from influential producer Pete Waterman, pop impresario Malcolm McLaren and sometime collaborator Terry Hall

Featuring contributions by guitarist Dez Dickerson, Public Enemy frontman Chuck D, soul singer Beverley Knight and Paisley Park label president Alan Leeds

Lots and lots of TOTP, the epic Ziggy Stardust film, classic Queen, Ian Dury and plenty more there. And the Blues Brothers is on ITV4 on Friday at 11.35pm. But If you've never seen Ziggy, you really should. Slán.

    Agreed.

Took a lot of guts to 'kill' off a character live onstage, especially at his commercial peak.

The only thing we've got to thank Rick Wakeman for is the counter-reactionary bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols.

I never get tired of watching the Sex Pistols end Bill Grundy's career (on Oh You Pretty Things just now),

Sanctimonious auld guffer was trying to wind them up all evening, and eventually they bit. He deserved it.

Just a heads up for Genesis night on BBC2 next Saturday, very strange programming by Auntie, you think the channel that specialises in music docs and screened Prog Britannia and The Life of Rock with Brian Pern (which is coming back btw) would have commissioned this.
    Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes

A feature-length documentary about one of the most successful British bands in rock music, reuniting Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett to tell their story. The film recounts their extraordinary musical story, exploring the songwriting and the emotional highs and lows. It features previously unseen archive material and rare footage from across their entire career.

Nice one Harry, I haven't seen that Boy George film before. I'll give it a look.

The songs featured in 'The Richest Songs in the World' must be considerably richer just from all the BBC Four repeats! 19th showing this week and this won't be the last time ...

Genesis documentary on BBC2 on October 4th reuniting all members of the group for the first time since 1975

Also on the Saturday Night (although I'll probably be watching that Genesis reunion to be honest), another chance to see 'When Harvey met Bob' (RTE2, 9.30pm)
Drama about the men who organised the Live Aid concerts in 1985. Having sold millions of copies of charity single Do They Know It's Christmas?, Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof realises much more still has to be done to combat famine in Ethiopia, and conceives the idea of a global music event - a plan that starts coming to fruition when he meets larger-than-life concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith. The film charts how their ambitious scheme turned into the biggest televised charity event in history, as well as documenting the many conflicts that sprang up between the unlikely partnership along the way. Starring Domhnall Gleeson and Ian Hart

Considering its tarnished reputation, there's a heck of a lot of TOTP on at the moment.

I think the BBC2 Genesis compilation tomorrow is new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Watching a tape of tonight's TOTP2 ... I've just realised that Arcade Fire are basically a Dexys Midnight Runners Rip Off.

Some good performances on this episode.

This Genesis programme is great - sounds of my childhood!

My brother was (is) an avid Genesis fan, I grew up to the strains of them wafting out of his bedroom!

Always was under the impression though that Peter Gabriel was replaced by Phil Collins, never realised that they played together at all. You learn something new every day!

The Peter Gabriel of the early years is unrecognizable (to me) compared to the guy talking in the studio

I'd know his voice a mile off, but goodness me, age has - apparently - "normalised" him! (not sure that's the right word, but best I can do at this hour of a Saturday night :D)
