Love DMC4 myself. I think I've bought it 3 times at this point. Legendary Dark Knight mode on the PC is amazing and they added the ability to switch styles on the fly which was my only gripe with DMC3's wonderful combat system.

I loved a FPS called Singularity on the PS3. I don't think it got fantastic reviews but I had great fun playing through it at the time

I remember it getting pretty ok reviews. I think the fact that activision did absolutely nothing to promote it was part of the reason it died an early death.!

I loved Singularity too. Great story and long campaign, quite bioshock-y too I felt.

Wasn't going to mention it considering it sold so well but seeing as it's doing so well in the "Games you hate and eveyone likes thread" , my favourite game of all time is probably Modern Warfare 2, there I've said it.

Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain for the PC

Absolutely loved this game when I came out back in 1997. I still have the original disc at home somewhere and play it from time to time.

Not the most cunning or special of RTS types games, but I still think it's a great game, especially further into it and it starts to get really hard.

I think I only know of one person who remembers this game and liked it as much as me.

This bad boy. Played it all the way to 1000 GS points, beggars can't be choosers when it comes to survival horror on the xbox 360

A real oldy, but I used to love Best of the Best: Championship Karate on the original gameboy. All my friends used to hate it.

Probably the game I've invested the most time in, it's hugely flawed but when it was in full swing and was the most recent COD game man it was so much fun to play with boardsies, utter hilarity some nights.

as Mr.E mentioned earlier, i loved x-men:origins wolverine. and in the same mould, i love the deadpool game. sure they're not perfect by any means, but it's great fun to run around as wolverine/deadpool just ripping through hordes of bad guys :)

I loved Corsairs: Conquest at Sea, fall all that it wasn't brilliant or anything.

But it won't run on my laptop any more as it's so out of date :(

I loved this game. I played it after HL2 which was disappointing. The open world and weapon choices were great. I got a special edition on sale and the truck made travel easier. Less repairs and a great gun.
IEDs and explosive crossbow were great too.

I was quite enjoying RE6 until the save system started fcuking with me and I put it aside.

I was a huge fan of Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2. Obviously love Broken Sword as well (and am waiting in dire anticipation for December 4th when I get my very late birthday present) but there was just something about the dry and witty humour and sometimes ridiculous fairytale clichés that I really got a giggle out of. Same for Monkey Island et al.

Just not enough drive for good old point-and-clicks any more.

Cossacks II, IMO it has the best napoleanic era battles. The conquest map is simplistic but the actual battle format has a certain historical accuracy that many games fail to recreate. At the time it also escaped the I attack your base you attack mine sort of thing that goes on with AoE and other RTS strategy games, you actually had to protect strategic resources away from you base, so there could be massive battles over a village that supplies coal. Or choke points like bridges and mountain passes. Also the pathfinding for infantry using roads was good but also opened up excellent ambush potential.

Urban Chaos on the PS1, I wasted so many hours on the game, the mix of typical cops n robbers with occultism was a novelty to me at the time. The levels had open world feel and for those with a sociological eye it had a black female protagonist. It was also challenging at times.

    Spore

I got it around a year or so after its release. People hyped this game to an insane degree. I get extremely wary when this happens. I don't follow game development any more as it always ends in disappointment. After it got slated, my expectation dropped so low that I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got my hands on it. I enjoyed all the stages expect the useless open-ended space stage. It was quite creative and fun throughout.

But....but... the open end space stage WAS the game. The bits that came before were basic in an.... rts for beginners kind of way that could be breezed through....

In fairness.... There could have been a game in there somewhere and a good one at that but they lost it somewhere in development.

This is what I was coming into the thread to post. I remember being ridiculed by friends who borrowed it on the back of my rave reviews. I loved it at least.:pac:

So I've done well. Spore is a game that I like that nobody else does.

How is the space stage the game? It was a trading simulator

    FFXIII

I just don't get the hate for this game. Sure it has it's flaws, quite a lot in fact but it's by no means a bad game. The story was nonsense but then when hasn't a FF story been nonsense. The battle system was the best in the series since the job system of FFV and the soundtrack was probably the best in the series.

    Angry Birds:
It gets knocked a lot by "hardcore" gamers because it's a casual game, but it's a hell of a lot of fun, addictive, challenging to get 3 stars in every level, and I've probably put more time into it than any of the current gen of console games.

I think the Angry Piggies spin off is brilliant.

    Brink.
A fantastic game-world design with fun movement mechanics and customisation. Solid teamwork is always required to win the objective and the aesthetics were pretty solid. It's a Splash Damage title. So many hated it, I think it's awesome.

    Syndicate (modern FPS version).
This was slated across the board for being generic and boring, but I really enjoyed the game throughout. The weapons were good fun, upgrading your enhancements to being able to pulverise the enemy as you progressed through the game added a bit of depth to how you played. Visually it was quite pretty as well. Can pick it up cheap enough these days. Co-Op was loads of fun too, though a lot of the missions were far too short, but there were more weapons and customisation options in that than in the Single Player.

Apparently most of my taste in games sets teeth on edge, but if I was to pick two it'd be Coldwinter and Firewarrior for the PS2, the first is a superior FPS, built around a single player campaign and brilliant stuff, the latter an excellent trip into the Warhammer 50k world from the opposing side, nicely done.
People either have never played them or have and dislike them, particularly the latter.

Urban Chaos on the PS2, now that's a brilliant game, made by Rocksteady, makers of Batman AA/AC. Well worth finding and playing.

The only real misstep the game makes is it's very badly paced, which is a gamebreaker for most people but I found the good out weighted it for me. I just really enjoyed tha battle system.

The story was complete naff but from FFVII and onwards the story has always been naff and not really important.

Badly paced (to an excruciating level at the start), awful story, awful characters, awful, boring level design, whiny Americanized voice acting - only thing I enjoyed about the game was the battle system. Even that wasn't good enough tough for me to finish the game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,519 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I was really busy at the time and playing it in 2 hour bursts so that probably mitigated a lot of the pacing issues. I could see the game being a chore if you binged on it.

I can only equate it to binging on cake.

The initial excitement of seeing a full cake - the sweet taste of the first slice...

Then the eventual vomiting and sickening lack of desire to go anywhere near the cake again.

Most people hated Castlevania 64 on the old N64 but I loved it, especially the Garden Maze section where you're being chased by two Hellhounds and a chainsaw-wielding Frankenstein monster.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,519 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I played Vania 64 recently. It's not great but it's not bad either. You can definitely tell it was rushed. Definitely doesn't deserve a lot of the hate it got. I think a lot of Nintendo fanboys were jealous that the Playstation got Symphony of the Night.

Remember sticking a lot of time into this little beauty! Not to a lot of peoples tastes, but I loved it!

Grabbed Never Dead at the weekend and rather enjoying it. From the reviews I expected something truly terrible but the concept was interesting and I figured that at the worst it would kill a few hours for about the same as 2 pints. The gameplay isn't exactly all that interesting and any time you lose your head it gets annoying given how your body loves to fall in a way that makes reattaching the head a chore.

It's a long way from being a great game and isn't one that id be recommending anytime soon but it doesn't deserve that abysmal reviews it got when it first came out.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,291 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I quite enjoyed Dragon Age 2. Yeah, it was badly designed at times, repeated the same areas over and over (and over) again, and didn't have the best of stories, but still. Combat was fun enough, and kept me entertained for the entire thing.

    from the 360 generation;

Ghostbusters - love this game, got it the Christmas it came out and really enjoyed it. i dont know how it wasnt more popular

Rise of Nightmares - I can understand if people got peed of trying to control this game with the Kinect but with a bit of patience its worth it. Another Christmas day game which i really enjoyed, the environments in the game were really good, a great horror game

Red Faction Guerilla/Armageddon - Dont know if these games were hated but dont think they got the recognition i feel they deserved

Duke Nukem Forever - yes, i went there

Turok was a well recieved game on the N64.

Turok 2 even more so becuase of the graphics due to the expansion pak.

But the first one wasnt a game nobody else likes.

I loved both of them. Shooting dinosaurs, how could you not like it. :D
