Leaving party to run as independent

What is the success rate of people who leave a party to run as independent? Generally do people lose or gain votes after leaving party?

Reason I ask is that I have a family relation who has been a Local Town Councillor who has won two (Town) elections and who just missed out on getting a County seat last time around but the party has decided to run with younger candidates (who have never run before) at the expense of my family relation.

My relation hasn't decided if they will run as independent or not yet but I think it would be good to see what has been the success rate of people who have left a party and run as independent.

This is a how long is a piece of string type question. Really depends on the person, the issues etc. Typically those who have enjoyed the greatest success did so by quitting over a locally popular but nationally damaging issue such as local hospitals and whatnot.

Simply being overlooked by a party might not have the same weight.
