Agreed. It would be like Breaking Bad continuing without Walter White.

I hope there will be more decent homegrown stuff in the future but it will be a long time before we see anything from RTE in the same league as Love/Hate.

Love/Hate as in what we have had sans Nidge would not work any more than Breaking Bad sans Walter White. All the storylines are based around Nidge and having Nidge dead means most of the stories are dead too.

Love/Hate changed out expectations for Irish drama completely. Agreed, it will be a long time before Irish drama produces something as good.
start again .....new show new gang ....just like in real life....i'd even allow them resurrect dead cast members

Agreed. We clearly need a good strong crime based drama akin to Love/Hate. As outlined earlier, a cop show spinoff is one way. Or a spinoff new show focusing on Terence and other associates? Give it a new name so as to stop comparison to the days of Nidge?

start again with leighton and warren being naughty at primary school and tommy is in their class as he now has learning difficulties.

the series shows tommy rise to power against the 7 year olds and his demise when he ****s his pants and his mum has to come and collect him

I hope Love/Hate or a spinoff does return in 2016. We can assume there's nothing being made for 2015 (unless it is done in total secret concentrating on Big Balls out in Spain?!!). In the meantime, though, what will replace it for this year? I have heard of nothing being made but hopefully we will have something worthwhile instead of the usual abysmal mix of The Week in Hell, er, Politics! and reality competition shows.

Love/Hate should not be left go in favour of useless fare like the affore mentioned. There is so much yet to tell in the Love/Hate world with or without Nidge in my opinion. A direct continuation focusing on Fran and co, a tense prison drama, a spinoff cop series a la Miami Vice, or even a Dallas style recovery of Nidge are all possible.

For those of you who have been following the recent events with Stephen Clinch. There is a short documentary on RTE2 tonight about him which was shot last year.

"REBIRTH, The Story of Stephen Clinch" will screen this Monday night on RTÉ2 at 12:50.

Stephen spent nearly half his life in jail gives an honest insight into his troubled past, his addiction to drugs, armed robberies and literally being on death's door. He turned to acting and will be familiar to many from his appearances as Noely in LOVE/HATE. The difficulty of fully escaping from such a past has been made clear by events post-dating this film which have seen Stephen once again in prison. A gritty, moving portrait.

Watched it last night, he seemed to be in a good place and loving life with the feedback he got from Love/Hate. I wonder did he relapse on drugs or what, probably not right to speculate with a court case ongoing. I felt that RTÉ should have given it a more Prime Time slot seeing as he was a star of their biggest ever drama.

dunno ...there's some other ****e about a car salesman they are passing off as the "new" love hate, because that was the best the RTE marketing dept could think of

This Clean Break series seems to be this year's equivalent but am unsure if this will be good or not. It sounds more like Trouble in Paradise (2007) than Love/Hate to me. AND TIP was only marginally better than 2004's The Big Bow Wow.

It's supposed to be about a Tiger Kidnapping gone wrong, and it's four episodes. So I'm assuming that episodes one and two will be a lot like episode one of Love/Hate season four (showing the actual kidnapping itself) and the following two episodes will be more like Love/Hate S4 episodes 2-3, dealing with the fallout from it.

I heard it is about a tiger kidnapping and hopefully it will be like the one in Love/Hate. But the important difference is that this is not Nidge or Fran but an ordinary car salesman involved this time. That's what makes it more Trouble in Paradise than Love/Hate.

I hope it is good. It won't be as good as Love/Hate but I hope it is passable anyways. But I have the feeling it will be a Trouble in Paradise-style bickering family thing with the business going downhill and the tiger kidnapping perhaps late rather than early in the series with perhaps someone getting killed. I hope I am wrong though ..

Just rewatching Love/Hate season 5, does anyone else reckon the Nidge vs Fran storyline would have been a little more interesting if Fran hadn't been apprehended so early? A few episodes of guerilla warfare between the two would have been predictable, but ridiculously exciting. :D

If you'd more of Nidge v Fran you prob would have had less of Nidge v Patrick so I dunno.

Found it crazy some of the character witnesses the scumbag was able to call on . Makes me think less of Damien Dempsey as if that was possible :pac:

It's amazing that Love Hate was able to cast genuine Drugs Gardaī and genuine drug addict criminals. I'm not sure many other shows have that authenticity.

Only one I can think of that did it was The Wire.

Did anyone else read some jouno saying that the Final series was crap, got poor ratings and that is why there wasn't another season?

Was looking for it but now can't find it. Chance I might have just read it in a tabloid rather than online.

If anyone can remember that and also who it was, let us know as was telling someone and they wanted to know who it was. Cheers.

RTE should bring back Love/Hate as soon as possible. Over the past year, as all we have gotten is poor modern country music, reality TV, etc. It is time for Nidge to come back and clip all this stuff.

I dunno. If it was coming back it wouldn't be due until Oct/Nov. Hardly need to start shooting yet for 6hrs footage, would they?

Totally agree. I'm sure I read only last week that love/hate was returning in 2017.
unless nidge is coming back reincarnated then I doubt he will be clipping anyone

Don't remember seeing that but they're wrong anyway. Whatever they thought about the quality of the series objectively it got great ratings.

Would need something around 8-10 weeks to film 6 hours.

But even then you've lots of hard work ahead, getting that footage into a logical order whilst working within the constraints of TV (i.e., need to divide it into 6 chunks such that theres a coherent story in each one but also 2 or 3 cliffhanger moments (pre ad breaks and end of episode), whilst also continually pushing the overall arcs forward.
So really difficult to get it to TV in November if you haven't even started filming yet.

Besides which at the very least they would have to be casting and auditioning at this stage and we'd have heard about it.

    So not happening this year.

So is Siobhan who was a big part of the last season's story line.

They really did a number on all the characters

    Hughie - dead
    John Boy - dead
    Darren - dead
    Tommy - mentally gone
    Nidge - dead
Elmo - in prison for a supposed good while
Fran - in prison for a supposed good while
Fran's second in command, Dean - dead
    Big Ball's nehpew - dead
    Siobhan - dead
    Debbie - dead
    Janet - dead
    Stumpy - dead
    Luke - dead

Not sure what story line you can come up with after all that! Especialy as Patrick only makes pipe bombs, he's not a willing player in any of the gang stuff.

Is Fran not dead too? Or did he just have a sore hole for a while?

Well they are getting plenty of new storylines for a new series in the news over the last few months if they want to make a new series with new characters.

Forgot to mention Dano, also dead. Or maybe not! I would not rule out Nidge yet. The real world Gilligan survived a similar shooting. It really is up to Tom if he wants to reprise the role. BUT we need a new Love/Hate series, preferably with Nidge.

I'd say the latter :) He is in the best place to be taken care of. A 2017 Love/Hate could have Fran the man back outside doing what he does best. And Nidge surviving a la Gilligan.

RTE seem to be more interested in poor modern country music at present! Love/Hate usually films around April going on past seasons. This is the best series from Ireland and they should go back and do it again. Simple as.

ha yeah they did a number on the IRA lads too. Dano, Git, the 2 brothers, and eventually Lizzie got shot too!

they brought back Darren after he was shot so for a show that prides itself on realism I dunno if they'd want to do that again.

In a way the show has just been about Nidge, Rise of the Foot Soldier and all that, so with him and his gang all gone I just don't know how they can start again.

A whole new gang is a different show and would be tricky to pull off too, could be a recipe for disaster.

Tom (nidge) was interviewed not long after the finale of the last season on today FM and confirmed he loved being part of the show and will miss it now that he is definitely dead. Show writer thanked him for his years of service and said most likely scenario would be Patrick's control now of the underworld and that Fran would be back. In saying that he also confirmed he hadnt started writing any of the script yet other than the outline.

Love/Hate was ultimately about the rise and fall of Nidge though initially it was focused on Darren. Tom, and all the cast were great and it was a great series that has not been equaled before or since on RTE.

The series has left a major gap that has not been filled. Last year saw Clean Break which was okay but nothing near as good as Love/Hate. Later we got Rebellion and again was okay but nothing near Love/Hate. While other series seemed to have restraint inbuilt into them, Love/Hate decided to present us with gangland culture and its violence to the fore. It gave us the grim, depressing reality of this world where people start out happy and rich but end up depressed, stressed and either dead, in prison, on the run or brain dead. Far from glorifying this world, Love/Hate showed us that this world always ends in tears. By the final episode, I would not want to be one of the characters in it bar Mick Moynihan or the other Gardai. Or maybe Big Balls or Tony.

Nidge was an excellent character. Tom probably does not want to reprise the role but it would be great if he did of course. I'd love to see Fran the man as the gang leader too and him and his ally Patrick up against Terence Big Balls May would make a great series 6. Ado, Elmo, Pottsie and Tony are still there too of course and could be brought back into the story.
