Any really good dentists in the county?

I need a dentist, probably in the Ennis area but I'd travel if I could find a really good one. I have a troubled history with dentists. Awful childhood experiences left me terrified to go near them and so I go maybe once in 10 years. The last two times I went, I used dentists up the country who knock you out. This is expensive and becoming very hard to find. So I'm wondering if anyone knows any dentists who specialise in or cater for people with acute fear ?

I'd highly recommend Dr. Oonagh O'Regan and Dr. Helena Joy.

Do travel further! I've had bad experiences with dentists in Clare so far (arrogant, trying to sell you treatments which are not necessary and expensive, bad craftmanship etc.)
Then, one day, I was so much in pain (on a Saturday of course) that I was desperately looking for a dentist to help me. Called all the dentists in my area and in Ennis. No such luck. They didn't even bother to call me back on the Monday after I left a message on their phone.
My helpful neighbour finally found one in Limerick who booked me in immediately. Was a long drive, but worth it.
In his waiting room was a framed award for being the most gentle dentist ever (or such like) and he was. The nicest and most non-judgemental dentist I've ever met. He did a great job, too.
Not exactly cheap, though, but worth his money.

It's Dr. Denis Kerrisk in Limerick, if I'm allowed to name him. If not, I'll send you a pm. You'll find his details in the phone book or online.

Highly recommend John Sheehan Ennistymon, (065)7071207, he and his nurse are fantastic: I get very nervous about dental work but they put me completely at ease. I don't know that they specialise in treating people with a fear of dental work but they have worked wonders for me :)

I'd recommend Oonagh O'Reagon out in Rosleven. She's very good now I have to say. I am probably one of the most nervious people and get stuck up over nothing, I do trust her and wouldn't hesitate recommending them.

    Hope this helps

I've been going to Dr. Gerard Brown on Woodquay (across from Domino's pizza) since I was young. I find him to be a nice man who takes the fear out of it all.

Brian McCabe in the square is excellent only dentist I've ever been to where I fell asleep during an extraction :D

I would second John Sheehan in Ennistymon

I'm very grateful for all the replies. Alas good ol boards, everyone recommends a different dentist :) I guess people are recommending their own dentists which is fair enough but not really what I'm looking for I think. I'll keep asking around. Thanks again.

Of course everyone would recommend their own experiences. But if you tell us what you are actually looking for it would be easier to recommend someone.

If it's about dental trauma you might need first a psychologist. No dentist or dental practice can help you if you are terrified in the first place.

If it's about a childhood trauma of any abusive nature, you'll need a psychologist as well or at least someone who is with you all the way at the dentist's.

If it's about a gentle dentist who knows about fears of drills and what not I still recommend Dr. Kerrisk with his award winning gentleness.

Nobody can help you unless you tell us what the actual problem is.

Maybe you just should make an appointment with any of the above and talk to them and trust your gut feelings. If he/she understands your fears, then just trust them. If you feel they don't, walk away.

And by the way: There is never a quick fix to be found on boards or the internet as such for unspecific or any problems.

You still can make a chocolate sacrifice to the tooth fairy, though ;)

(The tooth fairy has the same pm as I have :D)

    Good luck!

This dental practice is in Callan, Co. Kilkenny. http://www.callandental.ie/nervous-patients.html
Don't know a thing about the practice except it is upfront in offering 'sedation dentistry' and claims to have the 'only dental phobia certified dentist' in Ireland.
Wishing you the best of luck.

For the benefit of any other who may read this thread, I have found a couple of dentists in Limerick that advertise as specialising in or being sympathetic to nervous patients. They also offer varying degrees of sedation. They are also recommended by others here on boards in the limerick forum.

    Alexandra Dental Practice
    http://www.limerickdentist.com

    Crescent Dental
    http://dentistlimerick.ie

From other recommendation on boards, I'll give Crescent a bell in the morning and book in for an appointment. We'll take it from there.

This is incorrect. A good dentist can certainly help a lot as regards fear and/or a past traumatic experience.
