Looking at those signing up it seems many are turned off by the price of the half marathon being the same as the others. I know there has been a lot of previous of this from reading threads but even 10 eur less would attract more people.

And conversely it's always thought the Ultra is great value, I guess the fact that they have to bus you out and back whether you are doing the half, full or ultra has a large bearing on it... Pretty sure it sells out each year... I got caught out a few years back as I was was planning on doing the marathon and by the time I got my ar5e in gear it was sold out!

Is it possible to get a Garmin route for the half marathon at Connemara?
I found one on another thread for the Ultra but when I then searched for it on my own account it wouldn't come up.

The course link I put up didn't appear to work when I clicked on it. So if it doesn't work for you either try this one instead. Cheers.

From the link you put up there FBOT01 it seems the half starts at Leenane. Where does it finish?
Also is it possible to park at Leenane or is it better to go into Galway and get the bus out. I might drive out there some day and run the route to get a feel for it.

Found this on the Connemarathon site. It is an interactive map of the terrain.
    http://www.connemarathon.com/sites/www.connemarathon.com/files/map/map.htm
    Is the route the same?

    Yep, thats where it starts
It finishes at same place as the marathon and ultra, just at the hotel at Maan Cross.

You won't be able to park at the start or finish, you're much better off getting the buses they are very well organised.

Yep, that route is correct for all three events

Connemara marathon reporting that they expect to sell out in next 48hrs,

For anyone putting it off, nows the time to sign up

How much slower would the half and full at Connemarathon run compared to other marathons?

  • Registered Users Posts: 412 ✭✭roro2

How much slower would the half and full at Connemarathon run compared to other marathons?

Somewhere between 2 and 30 mins for the full. It really comes down to your preparation, and your long runs in particular - length, number and the nature of any hills incorporated in them.

For example, if your training peaks with a single 20 mile run on a flat route - expect to struggle. On a flat marathon, you may be able to soldier on and maybe even maintain your pace over the last few miles. In Connemara, the two big hills might well slow you to a walk and with each being roughly a mile long - add 5-10 mins for each. The cumulative effort might then hit you at the top of the second hill with two miles to go and you might have to just slowly roll home from there.

The preferable thing to do is to get comfortable running on hills similar to those in Connemara and make sure you don't skimp on your long runs. Then, you can look forward to the two hills, pass people on the way up and take back some of the lost time on the downhills. They are not mountains after all - as long as you prepare properly.

Cheers for that. So I guess lots of long slow runs are the way to prepare. I'm doing the half so I guess the pain shouldn't be too bad! I'm trying to build up a fairly good base before I tackle a marathon.
I did a LSR last night. 23.5k in 2hrs. It was dark out when I ran but lovely and cool to run. When I came home I had a layer of salt on my face!

Based on that LSR you obviously have no problem with the distance but as per the previous post the main thing for Connemarathon irrespective of whether you are doing the half or the full is to bring some hills into your training. If you don't it may be a bit of a shock to the system when you hit mile 10 or thereabouts....enjoy:)

Cheers. When you say hills do they need to be inclines of upto a mile or does it make a difference. I do a 2.5k circuit with a hill for 200m. Played a bit of soccer tonight and have a pain in my hip. Took it easy enough so hoping it will sort itself out.
Just doing the run last night I was thinking the marathon is quite a distance to run. No easy achievement.
Other than my hip my legs have no stiffness today unlike my last long run. So I think I have found a decent tempo for the LSR, about 5 min/km.
