I want to use the BTW scheme to get my first racer bike. Not sure if cycling will be for me so kind of want to get a 'tester' bike. No more than 6-700 euro. Can anyone recommend one?
Im tempted by the Carerra in Halfords but have been told by one or two not to buy a bike in Halfords

Id say the Giant Defy range would suit your needs, the 4 and 5 models would be in or around your price range and they would ne a desirable brand so resale should be good if you decided it wasn't for you.

If I were looking for something new at that price I'd seriously consider a KTM Strada.

Don't waste the BTW scheme on a 'tester' bike. There are loads of good used bikes on donedeal/adverts.ie etc etc buy a bike for a few hundred and see how you get on. If you get into it you can then sell that bike again and use the full amount of the BTW and get a good spec'd bike.

Maybe look at this another way? If you buy via BTW bike now then that's it for 5 years. What if you really like cycling when you try it?
Would it be better to spend less on a used road bike and save the bike to work money for when you are sure that cycling is for you?
I'm not saying spending 600 on a bike is a bad idea I am just flagging another way of looking at this.

If you could stretch to €745 this is pretty much unbeatable value.
Light Alu frame, carbon fork (alu steerer), 105 groupset.

Comes in at under 10kg too.

Chainreactioncycles doing some good clearance deals at the moment,

Cube Peleton seems to be in a range of sizes.

Some great bikes there for starters. The Giant would be my pick for a starter. Although the 105 Raleigh looks great for the price.

some cracking deals there. Don't I could use that website for the BTW scheme. Would think I need to use a bricks and mortar place

It can be done apparently - search back through the threads here. Depends on how flexible your employer is AFAIK - never done it myself, so not speaking from experience.

How about saving up the few quid and have it ready - loads of deals on CRC, wiggle, etc - as some posters say, BTW locks you out for 5 years, so if you buy a beginner racer, like it and trade up (or buy a 'good' bike :pac:) you can use the scheme then.
