You dont swim as part of an adventure race, you kayak. Most ARs have a few different entry levels, to cater for different levels of ability. So you should find something to suit. If you plan on swimming, then you could try a triathlon. The Triathlon Ireland race calendar for 2014 is here.

    A sprint. 750m swim-20km bike-5km run.

Some races will put on a super sprint either, usually with an even shorter swim (~400m) and sometimes a shorter bike too.

Loads of options on that calendar Oryx mentioned.

Try-a-tri: distances vary, often 200-400m swim, 10k bike 3k run or similar
    Sprint: 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run
Standard (Olympic): 1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run
Middle (Half Iron): 1900m swim, 90k bike, 21.1k run
    Double Oly: 3000m swim, 80k bike, 20(sometimes 21)k run
Long (Ironman): 3800m swim, 180k bike, 42.2k run

    Take your pick :)
