Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Had my car fail on the above earlier. I don't have to pay for the retest so it's not too bad but will I need a new tyre to get this fixed???

Sounds like you need a new valve. But if the tyre passed then you wouldn't need a new tyre.

No you will just need a new valve, should only cost you a few quid.

I had never seen an NCT failure for this reason until a few cases recently, I reckon it is something they have decided to concentrate on a bit more.

The AA highlighted a few testers for missing damaged valves (the stems that is), and now maybe testers are conscious of being highlighted. I personally have never come across a valve stem that was cracked or cut to the point that it was likely to fail. A few valves were leaking through the valve that i've failed but its a case of the AA coming in doing spot checks and looking to fail the testers for missing items that are very debatable to say the least.

A chafed valve stem is probably as a result of a badly fitting wheel trim, which has been rubbing on the valve, if it's put back on again incorrectly, there is a real risk of a rapid deflation if the valve stem fails. It won't be as bad as a blowout, but I have no problem with it being highlighted if there are problems with it, a flat tyre is a flat tyre, and if it happens at speed, or if the handling is affected by a tyre that's gone soft, there is the potential for a serious incident.

I've seen more than a few people get into a car and drive off with a tyre that's almost falling off the rim because the pressure is so low, they should be aware of it from the handling, but power steering might mask it, and if the soft tyre is on the back axle, it may not be noticed so readily, until it causes the accident.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

They must of been given a warning or something, can't remember the last one I had to do until recently were we were suddenly getting a couple a day.

My mothers vectra failed on it back before 2002.

So sept 2024 - NCT fail - i get 4 NCT majors for 4 valves that tester believes could blowout at any moment - i wasn't stopped leaving which is odd if there is a real risk while i schedule the replacements , its only an inspection when i return but its a remove , breakdown , replace and balance probably 60 quid to rectify .Donr get me wrong i accept its a safety thing but it feels like everything else was in tip top shape so this was a way to fail it .

I attach pics what do you all think , death trap where I should be grateful or picky - old thread but current topic IMO

When did you last get new tyres? Anytime I've gotten new tyres they always put in a full new valve (unless it has a TPMS sensor attached).

I doubt you'll need balancing unless you want it, changing can be done without removing the full tyre as they should be able to breakdown only around the valve while keeping the tyre in the same location on the rim, replace valve and reinflate. Taking the wheels on/off the car will be the more time consuming job there.

I see there are ways of doing it without removing the tyre but I've never done it so can't comment on it.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

They are really bad though so I do not know why you are questioning it. Tester was 100% right.
