Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Earnings, Performance, and Nationality Discrimination in a Highly Competitive Labor
Market: An Analysis of the English Professional Soccer League*

    http://www.cgu.edu/pdffiles/pedace/football-soccer-draft-11-jse-ms0648.pdf
The results provide some evidence that players from South America may receive preferential
labor market treatment, but this is only evident in the Premier (or highest) division of the league.
In addition, this labor market discrimination appears to be a rational response from owners who
observe increased attendance with a larger presence of South American players.
A larger number of players from South America is
associated with a decline in team performance. An additional player from South America would
decrease a team’s performance by approximately one position, holding other factors constant.
20This suggests that South American players are over-compensated relative to their productivity
    contributions.
    Fans of
Premier division teams appear to be significantly more inclined to attend matches when the team
utilizes more players from South America. An additional South American player appearance
increases average season attendance by approximately 3 percent
. In other words, although there is some evidence indicating that
increases in the number of South American players has a negative effect on a Premier team’s
league position, these costly productivity effects may be outweighed by the revenue effects
(increased attendance) resulting from the existing consumer preferences. It is possible, for
example, that English fans could be attracted to the style of play (stereotypically offensive and
elegant) associated with South American players.

    A Panel Study

The Effect of a Ranked Nationalism Approach on Measuring Salary
    Discrepancies in Major League Soccer

A Brazilian agent told Alex Bellos a story about exporting Brazilian players overseas, \It's sad to say, but
it is much easier selling, for example, a crap Brazilian than a brilliant Mexican. The Brazilian gets across
the image of happiness, party, carnival. Irrespective of talent, it is very seductive to have a Brazilian in your
    team."
    Compared with the results in
Model (1), Canadian and Caribbean players still earn between 28% and 45% less than other foreigners, while
American players earn roughly 12% less than foreign players from outside North American (CONCACAF). This
result is conrmed later when players are evaluated by region based on the rank of their nationality.

Well, it seems a player like Soldado earned his big money move due to the fact he is a Spaniard.

So what you're saying is... Signing Willian will have cost Maureen the league if they finish second? :D

Yes and it was nothing to do with him having a very good scoring record in la liga for the last few seasons or that he has a very good scoring record to games for his national team.

"He went from Rangers to Arsenal, failed there, and then where did he go?  To Barcelona!  You have to be a Dutchman to do that.  An American would have been sent straight back to DC United."

The chapter in the Alez Bellos book about crap overpaid Brazilians playing in the Faroe Islands was great.

Was going to post the same as above. The book is from 2000 but still a great insight into the industry of producing footballers to sell abroad that exists in Brazil, purely because they're Brazilian.

If van Bronkhorst were Indonesian he wouldn't even get to play for Barcelona.

van Bronckhorst was not a failure at Arsenal.

Must be a defender who headed way too many balls in a time that the ball wasnt water resistant yet.
