not so nice...that video makes it look like a stadium from the Soviet Union circa 1975

It looks desperate on the video if only there was a multi million injection in to it.....

Yep and this is what the Irish bid is based on, what Dick Spring called a "Rolls Royce bid", 6 to 8 Soviet style grounds that will need massive facelifts, costing millions, and that will be totally underutilized afterwards.

Whereas the French have top of the range grounds ready to go, used for an even bigger event just last year

    Go France.

Nice short video on McHale Park and the rugby world cup bid. The official video with the four main stadiums released earlier in the week looks great and this was obviously based on it.

What a total embarrassment, who put that together and to serve what purpose?

Also I don't really see how this got turned into a Castlebar/Westport involvement. Obviously Westport will play an important role in hosting fans in hotels and their will no doubt be some people who will go out there, but at the end of the day Castlebar is hosting this event. Don't see anything about Killarney/Kenmare or Dublin/Bray or Limerick/Shannon involvement. Just saying. It's like saying Ireland are hosting the Rugby World Cup but some will be staying in England so its an Ireland/England event. But yes the hotels in Westport will be needed to host the fans.

Even now many Castlebar people go to Westport to socialise.

Rugby visitors likely to do the same. The more devout may wish to climb Croagh Patrick as a training exercise

It wouldn't/shouldn't have taken a genius to base most on the footage of the new bloody stand rather than looking showing the wall of concrete.

The fact that it's not seen as a Mayo bid by many is indicative of what's holding this County back. Way too much internal focus on who's doing better than who and not enough selling of the County as a whole. There's an incredible amount to offer and plenty of room for towns / areas to find and focus on their niche while supporting others.

A main selling point of Castlebar should be the fact that a town like Westport is so close.

I could go on but rant over. Hope Ireland wins the bid and it would be incredible for Mayo to have McHale Park as a venue.

Because the stadium is in Castlebar? The reality is that it's Castlebar who are part of the bid & hosting. They can highlight the advantages of having the surrounding towns while calling it what it actually is.

    .

Exactly, and not to be meant as undermining Castlebar either. We've a great county here but need to keep plugging away at our strong points.

Hopefully the new hotel coming to Ballinrobe will give the town the boost it has been badly needing. Great little racecourse (fantastic race course actually), great fishing lakes and close proximity to both Cong and Westport (tourism mecca's).

Castlebar has some decent shopping, a few new and decent restaurants have popped open, the Turlough Museum of Country life plus the town has the rail link from Dublin.

Ballina too has its fishing scene and just a short spin away you have Downpatrick Head and the Ceide Fields.

Not to mention the isolated beauty and scenery of Belmullet down into Achill.

There is a lot in this county actually.

(I'm also in big agreement that the McHale Park video could have shown it in much better light).

Ireland comes in 3rd place behind France & South Africa, the recommendation goes to SA, stadiums or lack of in Ireland one of the reasons cited
