Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Obviously I don't think this will ever happen, but I'd love to see it personally.

One less space for a minnow (awful for them, great for a neutral fan)

Appoint a manager, let him pick a squad from all the teams who didn't qualify.

    Ibra, jovetic, vidic, bale etc.

Who else would make the panel? And would you like to see it or hate it?

Ps - yes I did steal this idea from tv this morning:D

With Fordes form he'd nearly be starting!

With whelans ability to fool manager after manager into thinking he's brilliant, he'd probably make the team too!!

    Cech
    Ivanovic--Subotic--Nastasic--Alaba
    Hamsik--Ramsey
    Bale
    Mkhitariyan
    Ibrahimovic-Lewandowski

Something like that. Got lazy with defenders and just threw in 3 Serbians.

That's a quality team. Vidic would be there too.

Thought about him, but he retired 2 years ago.

    Never knew vidic retired.

Haven't they been pretty poor the last couple of years? Coincidence!?

I think the world cup winners could play a rest of world team in their first game post tournament, but entering a row side into the competition? No way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,480 ✭✭✭Chancer3001

It would give a lot of neutrals someone to cheer!

I'd go with Łukasz Piszczek instead of Ivanovic, and Arda Turan over Mkhitaryan

It would be fantastic in fairness. The build up to the World Cup squad would be a great sideshow.

Doubt they would have enough time to actually gel. It would be farcical though if they managed to win it.

Iran, Honduras, Algeria or a team of the best players... I know which one I'd prefer to see play.

But bigger picture I suppose, football will develop in those countries after the wolrd cup.

I couldn't give a flying fcuk about developing football in Honduras. Brazil 2014 is a poorer place without Zlatan.

Like it, but I'd have the following in there:

    Begovic -> Cech
    Piszczek -> Ivanovic
Me -> Either Ramsey or Mkhiki

Nah not for me. Maybe on form, but Cech is the better keeper.
    Piszczek -> Ivanovic
I'll give you that one, like I said I lazily and copiously picked Serbians.
Me -> Either Ramsey or Mkhiki
    Can't argue :pac:

This is a brilliant idea , but only if they are added as a 33rd team!
I'll get John Delaney on the case right away.
    The campaign starts here....#letzlatanplay

Isn't begovic already going with Bosnia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭erkifino

This was on the radio a while back. They were talking about the likes of Giggs and Best, among others, never playing in a World Cup. Who lost out? it'd be one helluva a merchandise money spinner for someone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭AgileMyth

The 'minnows' earned the right to be there. The players who didn't qualify don't deserve to play in it. Its not the GAH, there are no 'back doors'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,495 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

I couldn't give a flying fcuk about developing football in Honduras. Brazil 2014 is a poorer place without Zlatan.

It would be poorer still if it just became a tournament where all the usual suspects are sent to play increasingly meaningless matches.

Fans like you probably want Fifa to just line FHM's top 100 players against a wall and let the captains pick their teams one player at a time. That way you get to see all the so-called "top top" players because apparently that is what is important about a world cup, not national pride and competition.

Its this same attitude that has ruined the Champions league. "It would be a poorer place without all the big teams in it", now every big team can easily qualify every year and 90% of the games are boring and meaningless as fcuk.

Honduras could have the next Messi or Ronaldo waiting to star for them, but you would never know because you would rather have Ibrahimovic there, seemingly forgetting that already you could easily watch Ibrahimovic about 50 times this year should you really want to.

    This.

Nice idea, but what if Ireland is the minnow team? And we are kept out because a team of Zlatan's and Bale's go instead of us?

European teams will rarely be the minnows.

Worst. Idea. Ever. Why not add a second ball while you're at it? It's not some Mickey Mouse makey-uppy competition here, it's the World Cup, held (or perhaps I'm being naive) to crown the 'best' (or luckiest) international football team once every four years.

International football is seemingly becoming just as much of an inconvenience to fans as it is to club managers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

Fun idea, be good in Football Manager or FIFA but just not practical in football and in a competition where the fans are a massive part of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

No no no no this is rubbish and a waste of a thread.

It's last man back or nothing. Or fly goalie if it's 11v10!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,115 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Zlatan had his chance and blew it - would he have bothered his ass for Sweden if he knew he was guaranteed a place in a ROW team that would probably include much better players. Would Bale risk injuring himself putting in a shift for Wales? - the world's most expensive player would be a shoe-in for the ROW squad. Bad bad idea.
