Anyone do their own printing?

Hi all

Im finding it hard to get decent prices on flyer printing (well they probably are decent- but still out of budget)

The flyers are straight forward enough and don't have any minute/intricate details that would need printing from a printer with a crazy high DPI.

Basically I need about 500-1000 flyers and Im getting quoted around 30 cent a sheet which works out at 300euro.

For 300 euro I could probably buy a decent printer and then just buy paper and ink out of my own pocket. I probably wont make a savings this time.... but later down the line I would be ready to go if I needed more flyers. Like at 300 a go if I ran flyers 3 times a year that's basically a grand.

Just wondering has anyone gone down this road themselves?

Well if you have a printer at home. Set it to the highest setting with your design and see how it comes out. If you use text boxes in something like MS Word and set the page to landscape you get two or three sheets per A4 page. Better Quality paper might cost about twice as much if you buy it from a retail outlet. I would say somewhere around €6.50-€7.50 per 500 pages. A small outlay really considering what you would be printing. Although the last point would depend on the nature of your business: you may even be able to use some of the cheaper paper.

Boy, do I feel stupid now...... well I suppose its better finding out now and not after I handed over 300. Then there'd be a whole lot more than just stupid going on

to be honest it comes down to a quality of print/knowledge of graphic design/layout debate.

yes - you can easily do it yourself and in the long term it would be cheaper*

* = assuming you do not require additional work done by graphic designers and have the template already done.

any decent graphics house/printing house will proof-read and will fine tune the design - if its required, if you do not require this then go for it.

Also remember that you will also have additional costs of paper/ink/increase in electricity - and possibly need to purchase a guillotine and will need to cut the flyers to size.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get a printer and do it yourself but outsourcing it saves you the time of doing it yourself and the associated costs involved**

** = assuming you actually find a decent printer and not someone who is bullsh1tting, its only experience will make you learn who is bullsh1tting and who isn't.

oh …also, if you do purchase your own printer - you'll also have to learn about replacing print heads - as you'll be running so much ink through them that you'll have to replace them sooner than normal usage.

If you're printing colour flyers from your average domestic printer (inkjet or laser) you're unlikely to save any money.

Ink/toner for domestic machines is incredibly expensive so make sure you have an idea exactly how many cartridges you're going to use on any large print run. Cartridge manufacturers may quote average pages per cartridge at say 1,000 but this is usually based on 15% coverage, if you start adding images, large text etc your yield per cartridge will drop significantly.

You'll also struggle to achieve the quality of finishing that a professional printer will achieve when it comes to trimming etc.

Add to this the time and effort required and you're setting yourself up for a lot of work for no saving.

When we first opened we printed our own flyers it does take time for design and cutting luckily my Fiancée is brilliant at Photoshop so the design part was relatively painless for us the cutting is horrible it takes forever.
