This line from the MDP recruitment site put me off,

'capable of making clear judgements under pressure, people who can handle long periods of inactivity and still remain vigilant'

I know all jobs have some period of inactivity as im sure the PSNI does, but i just envisage sitting being a glorified security guard with a gun. I may well be far off the mark with that assumption though.

Yeah there are small detachments here but they are DCPO which are defense community police officers, basically they police military baracks for serving stationed military personnel.

Yeah from what I know it is long periods of patrolling on foot and vehicle, carrying a carbine and a glock, similar to security as said. It would not be what you would expect typical policing to be. That being said you can transfer for example to the PSNI at a later stage and you would make sergeant in the MDP before here as they have lost a lot of their officers, average age I was told when researching is like 52 so new blood is required, and a lot of room for specialising straight away and moving up the ranks. like I said a friend is in it based in Scotland, and is already specialising in TSG, where as here you would probably be waiting years and years for that to happen. It definitely has its pros but it would be as suggested above, 80-90% foot patrolling and vehicle patrolling the remaining part being police work.

You would need to thoroughly research it if thinking about it. I looked at it this way of Pros and Cons. Pros; good salary and career progression, transferrable, 4 days on 4 days off shift pattern, a lot of overtime with many taking a significant amount more money due to this, can specialise straight away during probation. Cons; not typical police work, 80-90% would be foot patrol or vehicle patrolling within the establishments and surrounding areas, but this would be a major con for many including myself, which is why I don't think I could pursue it as a career. I want to police and engage with people lol. Again this is just info I have found from I suppose technically direct sources I.e. a mate lol and just researched it myself. Hope this helps anybody, there is probably more to it but this is info I've gathered when looking into it.

If I wasn't getting married/married I'd definitely apply for Police Scotland or another mainland force.

Did anyone look Chiefy Con's Q & A earlier? He said about possibly changing the policy for part time officers and asked if someone would be interested. Would anyone be up for that? I wonder how the training works? Something similar to the Army reserve etc perhaps? Mind you he could do with a bag load of permanent officers before he worries about that!

I would be up for it if I could become full time eventually, though I wouldn't want another full time reserve scenario where increments took longer, but yeah I would. I seen also someone asked about another recruitment campaign and he replied finances permitting he hopes to open one in October 2015, surely that's promising for us in campaign 2?

I would too if I were able to manage it around my current job, working shifts already and trying to fit training in too. We'd would have to pass everything first though to be fair and score better than hundreds of others no doubt as well! I'm not sure what to take from that. He said a new campaign in October this year funding permitting but does that mean people from campaign 2 will start going through GV then or a whole new process altogether?!

'Want to recruit but within budget & cuts imposed led to current suspension of recruiting-hope to start again in October'

That was his response, doesnt really make clear which is meant whether its a new campaign or to start people moving through GV, surely October is very late to start GV when we have people that are about to do their PCA?

I think October is for a totally new campaign however I believe campaign 2 appointments would still continue similar to the way campaign 1 and campaign 2 coincided, if October gets a go ahead. I think it has to, numbers continually fall and less people are being recruited in, recruitment is too cumbersome look at the south they are below 13,000 in strength when it's supposed to be around 18,000 in strength and the first 100 recruits just passed out even though the process started end of 2013.

Same here the 370 odd that has been recruited from last campaign has taken that long it's just replacing those that have left from Sept 2013 onwards, it's not actually adding to the overall number, more topping up. If you look at the strength of numbers statistics on the site way more are retiring than I would say they expected from Jan there onwards. I'm hoping if they are anticipating a new campaign in October this year then that's promising for us on the merit list, fingers crossed.

If they are going to run a brand new campaign from October I would hope that they will recruit more than 230 from this campaign first!

You would think they are bound to, why start a whole new process when you have a list of 900 odd sitting 2-3 stages into the process

Part of me is hoping they start a new campaign in October, and part isnt until I know they will go through the entire merit list. I'll have myself worried sick no matter what decision they make.

Hopefully there'll be jobs for everyone in this merit pool who passes everything!!

Seen on the chief's Twitter as well as the ACC's Twitter the passing out of 38 student officers wonder what squad number they were must be 8 or so now?

I was starting to get concerned when they said new recruits were being put through a course to recognise farm animals, but at the end it said it was for town and city born cops. Most probably haven't seen anything bigger than a Staffordshire Pit Bull Terrier. Though, to be honest, I'm a townie and I can tell the difference between a sheep and a goat.

It's real, and it's not a bad idea either.

That's true, but tge fact that people don't know the difference between a sheep and a goat worries me...

Seen them myself, up at Magilligan, weird? Lol seems to be a form of deterrent to young people from what I've seen, some form of campaign they're manning from reading their comments.

    So angry reading this.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/ChiefConPSNI/status/620701464634200064

Now I thought the reports of a senior officer being injured concerned CC Hamilton, as I had seen the photo that was tweeted of an officer with a serious ear injury and it looks like the Chief Constable.

    :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 301 ✭✭KevBo2015

Not good. As I type this there are reports of 8 police officers injured, I wish them a speedy recovery. Always some out to ruin it.

Seen today in news 3,000 on today, plus those on tonight and on stand by there wouldn't be many who aren't out in the streets this time of year with under 7,000 officers. Plenty of overtime on offer I'm sure.... need more officers big time.

Anyone know what the current shift pattern is? I've heard on the grapevine that for big events like today the PSNI can reallocate rest days to cut down on over time during busy periods.

Don't think it's wise discussing shift patterns online however I have heard the same re reallocating rest days
