Candle in the Wind, suitable lyrics?

My 7-year old son takes singing lessons. He has just started to learn Candle in the Wind by Elton John. The song includes the words:

...Marilyn was found in the nude,

    and

    ...something more than sexual.

Would be right in thinking that these these lyrics are not very suitable for somebody of that age?

At that age he has no idea what he is singing. They are just words to him.

I often remember some of the songs that I sang along to as a child - it was only when I got into my mid 20s that I figured out what I was singing half the time!!

If you are uncomfortable, bring it up with his teacher.

My honest opinion is no. If they lyrics aren't to graphic/rude/insulting.
The word nude isn't really a dirty word(imo). If he gets older he might feel that certain things are bad because he wan't allowed to say them when he was young and it might confuse him.

Bit of a strange song to be teaching a 7 years old in fairness...

There's far more sexualised songs then that that kids younger then 7 sing along to,

As already pointed out the word nude isn't a bad or dirty word (unless you are very prudish I suppose)

It's not that I think it's a dirty word. He will lose his innocence soon enough withouth singing and thinking about female nudity and sexuality. He is a high-functioning child so will think about it.

I will say to his teacher to change to another song.

    Aren't they all

I think the more of an issue you make of it the more you bring attention to it. Just leave him sing the song. He won't be worrying about it. There's absolutley nothing worng with singing the word "nude" anyway and to suggest otherwise will just leave the kid with hangups.

It's not the point, but he has been clinically diagnosed as high-functioning. He gets his own separate reading material at school and reads the Sunday papers.

All that will happen is that when he goes to his next lesson the teacher will say that she has a new song for him.

When I was 7 or 8 I had Queens greatest hits on tape and the last song on side 1 was a song called Save Me. One of the lines of the chorus is "I'm naked and I'm far from home".
Now I wasn't high functioning or anything of the sort but I really didn't like that line.
Not because of the words themselves butthe imahe itself its not a nice one. I used to fast word the song if it was on my little tape player or in the car stick my fingers in my ears.
I'll fully admit I sang along to other songs with "worse" lyrical content (Luniz I got 5 on it would be one example) but I didn't know what they meant or really care. If he's learning to sing a song he will be taking an interest in the content surely.
Its not about the word naked or nude its the story the song tells and unfortunately Candle in the Wind tells of a woman who died and the line is about her dead, naked body. So yea change the song.
I was watching the show Beo on rte jnr recently and there was a girl who could only be 12 at the most probably younger singing July with Mundy and included the line "gorgeous Levi Ass" now anyone can call me a prude if they want but do kids need to be singing about gorgeous asses on a TV show for other little kids?
Doesn't seem right to me personally.

How do you get clinically diagnosed as high functioning at the age of 7????? :)

The school arranged an assesment, held at the school, with a clinical psychologist.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind.

You may also want to prevent your son from listening to almost all the songs in the charts currently. Pretty much every one of them are about love, relationships, heartache, cheating, sexuality etc. All very adult themes that will destroy his innocence. And let's not mention the almost-porn videos that go with most of these songs as well.

He'll read much worse in the Sunday papers than the word "nude".

You didn't really come here for opinions, just validation.

He doesn't have free access to the Sunday papers.

I called the teacher who had no problem changing to another song. She was very understanding and said it wasn't the first time she had been asked.

Mods, can this be closed now. Thanks.

Exactly. If such content comes on the radio or TV the channel gets changed.
