    Hi

Anyone know the reason behind he following....

When snagging my apt, I asked the builder if he could move the water heater timer/switch from the hallway, into the small room (2m x 1m) where the water cylinder is. I was told this was a Health and Saftey issue.

    Nonsense or genuine?

    Genuine
It's a regulation ,to prevent fire risk if clothing is placed over switch or timer

    Thanks Meercat

Funny how every hot press in the country most likely has a timer switch inside it.

Do you know where these regulations are available to look at?

Think this is the relevant one

    555.6.1
electrical equipment in domestic airing cupboard only allow
an immersion heater and its associated wiring but excluding switches
auxiliary equipment associated with water heating systems

a switching device controlling an immersion heater shall not be located inside an airing cupboard555.6.2

Funny how every hot press in the country most likely has a timer switch inside it.

There are 3 reasons for this:
    1) This regulation is not that old (about 2005 I would guess).
    2) Some regulations are frequently ignored.
    3) Many electricians are simply not aware of this.

I agree with this regulation mainly because it means that people are less likely to leave an immersion on by accident. This can be a very costly mistake.
Do you know where these regulations are available to look at?

There is no soft version available.

This book (ET101:2008) can be purchased from teh ETCI:
