Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Times came up with an interesting question for Ancelotti - "What's your ideal team, using players you've directed, but excluding your current set."

Here's his team: Buffon; Cafu, Terry, Thiago Silva, Maldini; Lampard, Pirlo, Zidane; Shevchenko, Ibrahimovic, Kaká.
Subs: Cech, Cole, Nesta, Gattuso, Seedorf, Drogba, Inzaghi.

Fergie would be too obvious a choice so I'll start with Wenger.

    Seaman
    Dixon---Adams
    Bould
    Cole
    Pires---Vieira--Fabregas

    Weah----Bergkamp--Henry

    Subs: RVP,Thuram,Klinsmann,Stojkovic,Petit.

    Carlito:
    Not excluding his current squad.
Players he has coached, in their prime and their importance to the team they were in and what they achieved while playing for him.

    GK: Iker

    RB: Cafu
    CB: Nesta
    CB: Thiago Silva
    LB: Maldini

    DM: Gattuso
    DM: Pirlo

    AMR: Di Maria
    AMC: Kaka
    AML: Ronaldo

    FC: Shevchenko

    Subs:
    Sirigu
    Ramos
    Stam
    Alonso
    Khedira
    Lavezzi
    Ibrahimovic

    Edit.
    I totally forgot about Chelski.

Probably put Terry and Cole in the subs over Ramos and Stam.

Soo it said pick players excluding current set, to which ye both decided to then include players from current set

The op doesn't have any players Wenger or Ancelotti are currently managing.

I just picked what I feel us the strongest team you could make from players Ancelotti has managed past and present.

Longevity and accomplishments wise, Terry probably edges Stam.
Stam was one of the best of the last 20 odd years though.

That's the joys of this thread, everyone has their own picks. At times it's hard to choose but I always loved Davids & Seedorf in their prime.

Ok,who's next to pick a manager & a best XI?

I'm a Seedorf lover myself, Davids less so (probably because he was crap at Milan) but I think Dejan is just different level.

But yeah, everyone has different opinions, which is what makes threads like this interesting.

Badstuber over Pique? and is there a more under-appreciated player in the history of football than Sergio Busquets?

If you think Biscuits is a better player than Bastian Schweinsteiger you are you out of your tiny mind.

And I'd have Badstuber over Pique every day of the week. Pique is only 2 seconds from a monumental brain fart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,677 ✭✭✭Aenaes

I figured you might speak up after I posted that. It's basically preference for me, I don't like Pique and Busquets has "tackled" like a scumbag on occasions.
There's also a good case to play Dani Alves ahead of Alaba and switch Lahm to the left but I don't like gung-ho full-backs who don't prioritise defending.

Busquets is an absolutely superb player, probably the best defensive midfielder in the world. But come on, he's not better than Bastian Schweinsteiger.

I'd have Busquets all day long. I'd make an argument that Xavi and Schweinsteiger are rather similar and both could do with a strong holding midfield player beside them. If the choice was Schweinsteiger of Xavi I'd pick Xavi and if the choice was Busquets or any other holding midfielder to ever play the game I'd pick Busquets.

    A Mourinho one

    Cech

    Maicon, Carvalho, Terry, Cole

    Alonso, Makelele, Lampard

    Robben, Drogba, Ronaldo

Subs: Casillas, Lucio, Samuel, Zanetti, Essien, Cambiasso, Ozil, Hazard, Eto'o, Ibrahimovic

I've probably even missed a few there. Great quality.

Ah here. First of all Xavi and Schweinsteiger are nothing alike. Schweinsteiger is perfectly capable of being a strong holding player in his own right, he's very powerful. Unlike Xavi.

As for any other holding midfielder to ever play.....Lothar Matthaus all day please.

Both the passing hubs of their respective teams. Schweinsteiger more powerful, but Xavi more creative and technically gifted. Both do better alongside a strong holding midfielder.

That's fair enough, personally I'd have Sergio Busquets over anybody. The defensive instinct of Makelele, the big tackles, the finely tuned interceptions and the positional awareness to match any rivals but in a class of his own on the ball, the player through who Barcelona's style of football begins.
