Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

My laptop just killed itself for no obvious reason. It momentarily froze then everything went black. It wouldn't restart at first so I plugged everything out, took out the battery and started it in safe mode.

I've had a look at the events log and I pulled the following details that seem to coincide:
    - System

      - Provider

       [ Name] Microsoft-Windows-WMI
       [ Guid]  {1edeee53-0afe-4609-b846-d8c0b2075b1f}
       [ EventSourceName] WinMgmt

      - EventID 10

       [ Qualifiers] 49152

       Version 0

       Level 2

       Task 0

       Opcode 0

       Keywords 0x80000000000000

      - TimeCreated

       [ SystemTime] 2013-11-26T18:18:10.000000000Z

       EventRecordID 21599

       Correlation

      - Execution

       [ ProcessID] 0
       [ ThreadID] 0

       Channel Application

       Computer [computername]

       Security

    - EventData

       //./root/CIMV2
       SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99
       0x80041003

Does anyone have any idea what happened and whether I need to do a system restore/reinstall windows?

    Cheers,
    hullaballoo

Googling the codes I came accross this conversation: http://discuss.pcmag.com/forums/permalink/1004434869/1004434868/ShowThread.aspx
    Running Windows 7 Home Premium

I was playing a video game and my PC powered down as if someone pulled the plug. No blue screen, no reboot, just off. I turned it back on and immediately looked an the temp reading, 120F average. Are there still software faults that can cause windows to just shut the PC off? Only thing I found in the logs is listed below. Another funny thing was that windows didn't recognize that it had shut down improperly. When I turned in on, it didn't give me that screen on start up.
The most likely causes for what you describe are overheating and/or power supply overload. Either of those conditions could cause either the motherboard or PS to power down immediately. Overload is most likely if you're running a "budget" PC (as opposed to a purpose-built "gaming" system) to which you have added (for example) a high-end video adapter, so that you're now pushing the power supply (which, in many cases, is just barely adequate for the machine's original equipment) to its limit.

It's also possible that a momentary dropout or "spike" on your AC mains caused this, even if it was too quick for you to notice.

    Could be dust build up.

    Thanks for that.

I'm not overclocking and I don't think it's overheating. I'll keep an eye on those things. I'm not sure about a power surge either since it's a laptop and not plugged directly into AC mains.

I found this on the MS site as well, which essentially backs up what you've said. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504#method3
