Southampton dont have to sell so he might stay for another season.

Signing Luis at 29 isnt a long term plan at all and shaw at 30millon-ish is very expensive, even if it is an investment.

If we got Costa and Cesc I wouldnt be to pushed about Shaw.

I'm not sure Shaw is the solution at left back. (I Don't want Luis either).
30 Million is a lot to be tying up in a prospect like Shaw and his wage demands are rumoured to be 100K a week.
He looked defensively suspect in the Ecuador game as well. He'd be better off staying at Southampton for another year.

I'd prefer if we went after Ricardo Rodriguez from Wolfsburg.
There were rumours after De Bruyne signed for them that we would be looking for Rodriguez in the summer.
He'd cost about 10-15M and be on half the wages of Shaw plus he's still only 21 and an established international with Switzerland (21 caps). He's a set piece specialist as well (which is a big need with Frank gone).

Well if the Luis deal is on the back burner we'd do a lot worse than keeping Cole.

I'd say Costa is near guaranteed at this stage, downside is Lukaku could well be going in the other direction. (Source). Rather keep Lukaku personally and get shut of the current crop of forwards, Torres being the only one of the current 3 (at a push 50-50) to keep.

I'd love to go forward with Lukaku, Costa and Eto'o but I think Eto'o has burned every bridge at this stage.

Looks like we could be signing:

Fabregas

All seem to be pretty close and will probably be announced after the World Cup. Not certain on Fabregas but the others are definites IMO.

By the looks of it we are also after a CB, Zouma looks likely to go on loan again.

Players out are:

Lampard
Cole
Luiz
Eto'o

So very busy summer overall for us, with possibly 5 in 5 out. Also the possibility of Lukaku and Courtois back.

Well and truly a changing of the guard.

I don't know about Cole, since there's nothing from the club yet. He could get an extension yet but off his wage demands are high, he might have to be cut loose. He would be a great boost to any MLS team if he wants the big pay.

I'd be happy enough with Luis if the rumours about the overall deal for the 3 Atleti players joining for £50m are to be believed. Paying, what, £25m for Luis on his own is madness when Shaw is only slightly more expensive with way more years in him.

Costa for a reported 32, luis in and around 17, cesc for a further 30ish. Its an expensive summer.

I'm not understanding the aversion to Filipe Luis. He might be the best left back on the planet at the moment, certainly I think he is the most balanced left back in terms of quality attacking and defending that I've seen playing at the moment. For 17 million I think it's a good deal, personally I'd rather that over Shaw for 30 million.

Luis is 29 soon so thats half the reason.

Spunking that money on a guy his age isnt a great idea IMO.

Especially when he'll need to be replaced in 3/4 years.

Bingo, either stump up the funds and get Shaw and we're sorted for a decade.
Alternatively, keep Azp with with Cole as back up. (Not ideal IMO, Dave deserves to start in his natural position.)
No need for Luis really, other areas need sorting first in my opinion.

The thing about shaw is, money aside and he is a little on the expensive side but if we were to go in for him he would certainly come because he is a chelsea fan and that is something any amount of money can buy. He could well end up being the next terry.
