I planted a few lavender plants this year, they added a great smell and colour to the garden, just wondering what's needed to get the most out if them for next year, do I cut off the stalk things or just leave them ?

Yes, cut them back to keep them bushy, they can go woody and straggly if left.

Best to cut them back by at least 1/3 for the first 2-3 years (usually around late Aug - Sept). Thereafter remove faded blooms+ stems in late Aug and within 1 month trim foliage.

This will keep the plant compact, dense and improve flowering performance following year.
