Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A crane at a stadium in Sao Paulo due to host the opening ceremony of Brazil's World Cup 2014 has collapsed hitting the roof and reportedly killing at least three people.

The head of the Fire Department, Mauro Lopes, has confirmed the casualties to local radio and said that the death toll might rise. Lopes said the incident could have caused more victims, but it took place during lunchtime.

The 68,000-seat stadium, currently named the Arena Corinthians or Itaquerao, was due to be completed by the end of December to meet a FIFA set deadline. A total of 12 venues are required to be ready by the set date.

2 people is the latest, I bumped a thread on the Sport forum about this issue - its really starting to look touch and go as to whether all the stadiums will be completed and pass a safety inspection.

    Which country is on standby?

Crazy! I've been causally following the the construction of these WC stadia over on the skyscraper city forum and I distinctly recall thinking "I'm no architectural expert but that one really doesn't look too safe!"

AP (Indo) also saying firefighters say 3 people dead.

It doesn't matter really anyway, 1,2 or 3 dead - RIP the victim(s)

Seperately, why is there a pitch already laid at this stage, seems bizzare? Are Corinthians playing around the build or something?

Brazil running into serious sh1t over the finals, particularly now they are in the spotlight again for 2nd time in a week.

It seems like the authorities aren't best pleased by the reporting of the incident according to someone working for the New York Times on twitter.

It's all kinds of F*cked up. Costing billions, infrastructure non existant, airports substandard, not enough accommodation, large swathes of the people don't want it, stadia not finished. Other than that though it's looking good.

Still we have homophobia and then a winter world cup to look forward to so this could be the best one for a while.

Thought I'd heard before that the country to host the previous WC is the default standby, as they have the infrastructure in place. Could be wrong though.

This has been coming. People in Sao Paolo are generally unhappy with the world cup / olympics development.

The airport is in serious need of an upgrade, the plan was originally to upgrade it and put in some transport links. The city really needs that as anyone can tell you that has sat for 3hrs in a bus or taxi on a motorway which can be only 2 lanes in stretches on the trek into central SP. It's horrible, severely lacking in infrastructure which was suppose to be a benefit to the city. Solution - govt has decreed that when Brazil play in SP it will be a holiday for certain workers to ease the transport. Also, rather upgrade the airport, the small city airport (in worse state!) will accept night flights.

There are unfinished motorways, buses which will ferry people in and out to the more remote cities rather than the promised rail links.

All in all, the WC looks like being a real lost opportunity in improving the countries infrastructure. The economy is booming in Brazil but not everyone is along for the ride. I predict total chaos for the WC and a slight improvement for the Olympics.

Another death of a construction worker

People aren't going to take notice until it's a fan/player/manager etc I'd say.
