    Flash back memory!
I prepaid this time last year, (similar offer) and despite this, DHL charged customs at the door. (I wasn't there though and my Dad paid for it, not knowing any better!)
I selected the other courier this time around (can't remember name, but at checkout - it's the one that isn't DHL) :o

I'm getting it delivered to work this time... Anyone got any advice if they attempt charging customs? I assume refusing to sign for the delivery and ringing their head-office to arrange re-delivery/ collection is the option?
There is no way I'm paying it twice like last time!

I've paid €30 in 'Duties and Taxes' (at the checkout).
Is that me finished with charges?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,447 ✭✭✭✭rob316

What should we do if DHL call to deliver the items ordered, and ask for further customs charges?
    Thanks

Refuse delivery, then ring dhl, they have a dept that deals with package charges. Explain to them what you paid already, you will be asked to suppport it with documents.

But again my advice would be dont prepay customs you will not save any money only probably cause yourself hassle.

Will take your advice on board for next time.

You could have got your cash back the last time. Which site are you talking about? American Eagle?

I think somebody was double charged and got back one of the payments last year.

    Also 50% OFF TODAY ONLY AT AE.COM W/CODE 94C486V1

    FYI
I just successfully used SURF25 to get 25% off all t-shirts I had in my shopping cart.
This is on top of any existing offers as my four t-shirts were from the discounted Cyber Monday deals section so they went from €4.70 each to €3.53 each.

No; I'm talking about the site this thread is about. Aeropostale

Anyway, I'll take another posters advice if there is an issue. Hopefully won't be!

Reason i asked, i didn't get the choice to pay duty or not, or choose Courier. I presume that's because i didn't sign up. I paid as guest. But last year i bought stuff.
I must have an account and forgot which email address.

As I said in my earlier post, do not accept delivery and just e-mail Aeropostale (or call if you want).

I e-mailed them on a saturday and DHL re-delivered on the Tuesday. I asked the driver what happened and he said Aeropostale contacted them. You don't even need to contact DHL/whatever, Aeropostale will sort everything out.

I also happened to e-mail Borderfree and they offered to refund me if I decided to pay the charges.
    Borderfree wrote:
    Hello xxxxxxxx

    Thank you for contacting Borderfree.

We do 100% guarantee the total cost for the delivery of your order since you had selected the prepay option.

We will advise DHL to remind customer that the taxes and duties were paid when the order was placed.

However, we do know occasionally upon delivery, customs can sometimes randomly stop an
order. With that being said, when you pay the additional costs to have your package released,
we would be happy to refund you for that extra amount once you email us a copy of the paid
    invoice.

We do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

So as Allyall said, you could have gotten a refund the last time.

As I said though, Aeropostale sorted it out for me so I didn't have to pay in the end.

You should argue it, I would. I would have argued my purchase on it's way here, only i hadn't logged in and wasn't given the option to pay later.
If you were to include your shipping fees it would come to ~ €44.
You can check it here - http://www.dutycalculator.com/

    Hi

You are charged duty on the goods, off the top of my head clothing can be up to 12% in duty depending on what type. You are then charged 23% on the shipping and goods value combined, I work it out at around €61 so that €59.18 sounds about right.

    Why taxed twice?

Never knew that before. Is there a reason they do it that way?

Sorry Allyall, the 23% is VAT, they are 2 separate taxes, you have to pay duty it can be 0% on some products but on clothing it is high.

You pay VAT @ 23% on the total including goods value, shipping and in some cases insurance (insurance would be included in DHL's fee though)

Ah. You don't get asked for that on electronic goods?
Never noticed it on clothing before, just assumed we were getting stung. Which in a way, we are a little.

    Bit confused over this bit
When importing goods into Ireland, duty is not charged if the total value of the goods (excluding shipping charges and insurance) does not exceed €150.

So there should be no Duty charge up to €150?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,447 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Duty is charged if the goods exceed €150, its not a like its a duty free allowance on a larger purchase, if you go €150.01 you will be charged the duty on the full amount.
On the text DHL gave you ring the number and they will give you the breakdown over the phone.

Mine came to $156. Which does not exceed €150.

@sud1, maybe you could cancel, or even ask to cancel 1 item to bring it under €150?

    It's worth a shot.

No, it's because all of the sales started on the same day at the same time, and rather than starting 40 different threads, and everything getting lost, I posted a few (two) of the similar styled brands early on in this thread, and the difference in payment methods. A few people purchased from them.

AE/Hollister/A&F/Forever21/AeroPostale and a few others are similar in style so thought they would suit this thread.

Received early this morning. I chose whatever the other courier option was instead of DHL (supposed to take longer than DHL; but was cheaper)
It'll be interesting to see what happens regarding custom charges...

EDIT: Cheaper courier option was a company called - "Aramex".

DHL just tried to charge me for customs when delivering the package. Refused, told the driver I'd already paid. He said to contact DHL, and he'll deliver again on Monday.
So I've contacted Aero, so fingers crossed it'll get sorted for Monday.
Bit of a pain getting charged, when you've already prepaid for Customs.

I'm half thinking of ringing DHL before mine gets here to stop that from happening.

I prepaid, (Which i was told last night was illegal :confused:) a lot more than i would have, had i taken my time, and opted to pay here. So i'm also half thinking, if DHL are looking for less, i could pay them, and get a refund from Aeropostale?? Would that work?

But I think they only refund the extra amount DHL charge. They won't refund the full amount you paid at checkout.

However as I said, refuse delivery and just contact Aeropostale so you won't have to pay another penny.

Yeah, just refuse DHL. That's annoying that they wouldn't refund their overcharge also.

But, if I refuse DHL, how long will DHL hang on to my goods?
Will I end up paying for them anyway and just claiming from Aeropostale?
Will DHL accept my confirmation email, as proof that purchase was made?
What is the point of 'Borderfree', if we end up paying customs anyway?

Am confused over what I should do......

so got a reply from Aeropostale last night....at least they were quick to reply...but it was not good news

We apologize that you are experiencing higher costs from customs for order 7xxxxxxxxxx. Unfortunately we have no control over the rates that your country may add on or require to receive your order.
Duty (or customs tariffs) is set by the destination country customs authorities and is determined based on a combination of the country of origin (manufacturing) of the goods being purchased and the classification of that merchandise. Value Added Tax (VAT) rates are set by the destination country. You will be able to view the guaranteed total amount of applicable duty and tax/VAT for your order, prior to completing your order, at checkout.

I just rang them there and asked about custom charges on delivery, that I won’t be the one signing for my parcel and don’t want it rejected/ paid for on my behalf at arrival because customs were already paid at checkout. They said it won’t be an issue at all – That all the parcels are managed and screened in the UK and NO charges will be applied on arrival.

So happy days. I didn’t wanna get an email from work saying a delivery came in for me, but they wanted money so they told em’ to f€ck off!

EDIT: This is for people who selected "Aramex" for shipping NOT, I repeat NOT DHL.
