have you removed the graphics card and reinstalled windows? or even take out the graphics card and run a linux distro off a USB stick and see if the same thing happens?

without the graphics card and in safe mode does it last any longer?

I rang them there today and in my mediocre German I managed to get them to agree to take it back and try to fix it but as soon as I mentioned they word refund they didnt want to know....I'm have to write a letter with it about what's wrong with it and I think I'll put something in about a refund in there too and ask about swapping the PSU over too for a 700w of the same price if possible.

Request they run a stress test. Least they could do.

I just put in the note that if theres anything wrong with the hardware they are to contact me before shipping it back thank fúck I found that free shipping thingy they have otherwise i'd be forking out 163 quid!

And I think that telling someone to Blas mir wouldn't sit very well with them!

Alas the honeymoon period is over I have had the PC freeze on me about 4 times in the last two days and the sounds lags and the video lags when I move the mouse playing a game

I dont want to send it back a third so does anyone have any ideas as to what may be the problem the drivers are all updated and I reinstalled all the cds that came with it.Also upon occassion the mouse and keyboard just stop working and I have to turn it off to get them back on.

Jesus, you're having no luck with that at all. :(

Strangely combination of errors in isolation you'd say lag would seem more likely to be isk related, or freezing possibly the disk or even RAM, seeing both you couldn't rules out a faulty motherboard mobo is screwed (Not much help so far I know).

Could you tell if it was just the mouse and keyboard that stopped working or did the entire system lockup (was stuff still happening on screen)?

It'd probably be worth having a look in the Event viewer to see if there were any errors at the time, the information is usually a bit cryptic but it may hint at what is causing the problem.

Other than that get memtest86+ out to test the RAM and maybe monitor the HDD with something like Crystaldiskinfo for a period of time, hopefully one of the above might hint at something.

The keyboard and muse stopped working as I was watching a movie and that was still playing only noticed they had stopped when i went to check a facebook message.

That's perfectly normal with nvidias latest drivers. Lots of people having the same problem.

Sometimes it beeps a few times and control returns with an "nvidia blah blah stopped working" error. Other times it just powers off and reboots.

Was working fine until I installed win8.1 a few months ago!

I havent gotten that error yet but is there a fix for it yet?

Stop using win8.1 I guess. I just put up with it for now, doesn't crash that often. Was worse with the last set of drivers, is more tolerable now.

Nvidia blame microsoft and vice versa. "Mouse lag" is a much reported issue with windows 8.1.

If it only happens when your pc is under load then it might be a faulty gpu tho. Make sure all the power connectors are secure etc.

I'm running windows 7 I wonder if its a problem with that too?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

No should be fine with windows 7. Swap out the graphics card to confirm that it's the cause - sounds very likely.

Your original build says windows 8 and 400W PSU, did you get that changed? If there isn't enough power then you would notice the system failing when under load.

edit: Ok I see it's 500W psu. What graphics card did they swap for you? Did you manually install latest drivers or did you let windows automatically attempt it?

I have windows 7 and a 500w power outage now and I'll check my graphics card in a bit but that is a brand new Radeon 200 series that they put in.

Did you check the event log, you'll sometimes find a hint in there to narrow it down a bit. You'd definately see driver or disk errors in there.

Did you manually install the latest catalyst drivers? Don't rely on windows to autoupdate.

I did straight from the CD provided!

Ehhh don't use the cd. That will be a year or two out of date. Install the latest ones.

I downloaded them off the internet restarted then launched civ 5 on direct x 10& 11 and still got the crash

What version are you running? Check the power connectors on the graphics card, make sure all are right. If it only crashes under load then it's definitely either a problem with graphics card or power.

Have you been monitoring temperatures at all (if not do so with HWMonitor ), or is it just you have noticed the case getting warm?

I noticed the heat coming off the case

Use HW monitor to check the temperatures of various components in system. I read your first page. Has anybody suggested that the cause might be the RAM?
