I'm looking for a netbook with ms office type features. Can I install open office on android / chrome os.

Which o/s is best for creating documents and viewing the traditional ms office files?

    Thanks.

I think chrome os, can only install google docs, and various chrome apps.
you can install linux, os, eg mint,32bit or 64 bit on any pc,or laptop, via live cd,or usb installer.

    http://www.libreoffice.org/features/
Supports large number of file formats, including Microsoft Office binary formats, OOXML, and RTF – both loading and saving them.
theres a windows or a linux version of libreoffice.

With Google Chrome’s built-in Quickoffice integration, you’ll be able to open and edit some types of Office documents with your Chromebook. If you run into issues, try the following troubleshooting tips:

    see above link.

you cannot assume that an adroid app will run on a chrome book.

i think you just get apps here ,

chrome os is different from android,
    its more secure ,
    designed for mainly online use,
    from a chrome laptop.
SOME apps can run offline .

The device is for a nephew heading off to college (journalism)

suggests that the chrome o/s will open most files. Thanks for info

I Read a review of the chromebook,
it says many apps wont loadup, unless you log in to your google account,
eg its got limited use, unless you have a 24 /7 net or wifi connection.
READ a full review before you buy it.
eg reviewer ,was on a plane, could not edit his files,as there was no net connection to log in to google docs.

    I just read that!

Chrome / Android both seem pretty limited in capability and processing.

Something like this appears to the best option despite the price

I think the Surface RT would be your best bet. The Surface RT comes with the full Microsoft Office suite, that is only slightly different to the desktop version. You should be able to get previous generation Surfaces cheap enough these days as well.
Android would be better than Chrome OS for this purpose also imo, unless you will have guaranteed wifi access any time you want to use the device. You can use Chromebooks offline afaik, but most of the standard features it expects a network connection

FYI these days Chrome OS has quite a bit more offline capabilities than it once did. You can in fact do quite a bit now offline. Still I would have to agree with yoyo about a RT device. Go onto the Microsoft store and have a look as I’m quite sure that the original modal is only like €270ish. Another option could be a cheep laptop.

The MacBook Air tends to be the tool of choice for journalists. It's mix of outstanding run time on battery/portability/features/performance is hard to beat.
