Guy with gravelly voice on Marian (RTÉ) giving out about some wall in Dingle

    Does anyone know who the "Guy with Gravelly Voice" on Marian this morning (RTÉ Radio 1) is? And whats the story with the trees and wall that was demolished in Dingle?

    The guy is Philip King -big name in the music scene generally - presents music prog on RTE radio Sunday night - more famous as member of the band Scullion, founder of Humming Bird productions, maker of Bringing it all Back Home etc and especially as being behind the Other Voices music series filmed in Dingle every year -- this years is next weekend :)

    Wall demolished is the boundary of the former estate house Farranakilla (trees are just inside the wall) - opposite old Dingle Hospital. KCC wants to widen the road as part of the Dingle relief road.
    Its not part of the old town wall as some claim - but is/was old. The trees were pretty big and must have been pretty old too. Not sure if they are rebuilding or replacing it. Kings point was that it should all have been left intact to enhance the tourist appeal.

    Google street view http://goo.gl/maps/Mqk36 shows similar work on the opposite side of the road in 2008.

    The trees look pretty shook!

    Part of the wall remains - the demolished section is just opposite the houses at the top of the hill in the googlestreetmap. Had a walk by this evening - (it's part of the Slí na Sláínte and very popular with locals)- the trees didn't look great and might not be a huge loss. The remains of the wall are piled in the field -- I doubt if they could be reused but am no expert. On the plus side there's now a fabulous view of the harbour mouth down to south Kerry.
    The reconstructed wall opposite is fairly ordinary and certainly wouldn't attract tourists. Will be interesting to see if the road is ever finished or becomes another incomplete/deferred project.

    That stretch of road is a disaster So it will only get better .... agree with the view .. Its nice

    There is no footpath on the opposite side for the terraced row of houses there (Ashmount?), steps come down from their gardens straight onto the road, which really is an accident waiting to happen. Moving the wall in a few feet will allow the road to be widened and then a path to be laid outside these houses too - good move IMO.
