Considering he was tweeting about the even around 40 minutes ago I doubt he blew his knee, just people trying to troll.

Have only really watched McGregor and the odd UFC fight when a friend played them in the house. Ill watch tomorrow though. For a newcomer what are the chances of McGregor to lose tomorrow? Bookies seem to have him overwhelming favourite but some people I know who follow the sport said they wouldn't be shocked to see him lose?

He's as much chance of winning as losing to be honest. I think the bookies have jumped onto the hype train

Purely because of the hype it'd be a big upset and would derail everything Conor has worked for so far.
On a skill level, Brandao is not to be taken lightly and losing to him is nothing to be ashamed of.
Brandao is very dangerous but I think Conor is better than him and will win confidently tomorrow.

Thanks! I'd say the atmosphere will be immense. Great for McGregor to get a chance to fight in the UFC in Dublin, I'd say he will be crazily pumped up for it.

That's the thing, bookies don't jump on any hype train. They balance their books based on the betting market demands. It's the gormless punter that has the odds so skewed.

Expect every bit of home town reffing and judging possible. It comes down to cold, hard cash when a promotion can make repeat money on a fighter in a particular city. Bernard Dunne hardly ever fought outside Ireland for that reason.

Dana said fox wanted this fight but that its a ufc fight pass fight. Im sure that translates to we want loads of people to sign up to fight pass to see it because of the hype around the fight and thats worth more to us than giving fox the rights.

I was surprised to see he was only ranked 12th in the weight class. I think on his day Conor could beat any of them

12th was a fair ranking coming into the fight.
He's never fought anyone as good as the guys in the top 10.

Id love to see him against some who is durable and can fight back, Guida i know is fighting soon. But something along the lines of him or miller.

Posted this in the fight thread, but probably more on-topic here: I hope Conor gets Poirier next. Look like Dustin hopes so too judging by the tweets he sent out last night. It will be a step up in class for sure for Conor but I think he has the ability to beat Poirier. Certainly he will have the physical advantage, imo.

The crowd sounded utterly obnoxious with their chants.

McGregor was dominant out there, still wanted to see a longer fight though. Fair play to him, wonder who he'll fight next.

Dustin Poirier would be an interesting bout.

Congrats to McGregor, a fantastic win, great fight & what an atmosphere.

You're very much in the minority so. Pretty much universal approval for the Dublin crowd. Most considering the best crowd ever to be fair

Image it was an American crowd, booing non Americans, crowd filles with American flags, dropping "aren't we Americans great" and singing star spangled banner constantly! Would you find that obnoxious?

If it was a card full of American fighters v foreign fighters then yes I would expect them to be cheering on the home team

There was not only boos for all the non irish as you put it.

There was pretty loud cheers for one of them in fact

The crowd was electric tbh, will do well to help grow the coverage of the sport here and bring more events here.

You were upset by the ole ole ole? Wouldnt think you would be fond of the USA USA USA either then :)

I dont like the ole ole but thats a different story, just found the crowd to be a home crowd, which they were, the Irish fighters won too and the big hype of the night got the business done, the crowd were going to be boisterous all things considered, this was the first time too!

It was only a few who booed. Certainly nowhere to extent of the booing that goes on at events in the states. I have no problem with flags, not sure why anyone would. The "aren't we (whatever nationality we are) great" merchants are always annoying. Singing and chanting is always to be encouraged at sporting events. Makes it feel like an event. There is a distinct difference between the whole crowd singing their own national anthem and them singing the fields of athenry.

What I loved was the noise and atmosphere from the very first prelim. I've never heard an mma crowd like it, and by all accounts no one has. There are always going to be gob****es in every crowd, but overall the people there added a huge amount to the event, even for those watching on TV.

Brandao got a bit of booing and a TINY bit for Pickett. So where was the booing for Sampo? Cummings? King? Kotani? Harris? McCall? Krylov? Donovan? Latifi? Dempsey? Seeing as the non Irish fighters got booed...

Atmosphere was electric, some people would find anything to complain about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,604 ✭✭✭dave1982

I was starting to lose a bit of interest in MMA too many cards watered down so UFC could get more air time on FOX and put on their own PPV's.There was a time if they lost the main event it would not affect the card because there was so many other great fights on the card.

I have to admit Conor is a breath of fresh air in MMA.

I thought the booing was crap, every guy up against an Irish fighter/Gunni and Brad Pickett got booed. Some people can stand it but the constant booing wrecks my head. The atmosphere seemed immense though, I'd say it would have been incredible to be at.

Poirier next seems the obvious shout then I guess? I don't know a whole lot about him but he got rocked early on against Akira and Brandao, although he finished them off himself not long after. If Brandao and Akira Corassani (!!!) can give him some trouble standing up I reckon Conor would have a very good chance on the feet.

Brandao was always going to get booed. A main event fight in Dublin against Conor. The writing was on the wall the moment the contract was signed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,502 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Every single event has people booing the away fighter, all crowds have fools, in fact the commentator even complimented the Irish fans saying their was very little booing. The crowd was immense one of the greatest crowds i've ever heard watching MMA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,911 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I refused to boo one fighter, even Brandao, gave em all a clap. Bizarre Pickett getting boo'd. Now if the Queen Mudder was in the Octagon then yes, then I would have boo'd.

Conor haandled thee fight very well. Great interview with Helwani after it as well where he described a few mistakes he made. Also, great respect between him and Diego in the post presser. Can't wait for his next fight to be announced.

Yeah, I gained a lot of respect for him in the press conference. He was very humble and very pleasant about his loss.

Most of the booing was of the pantomime kind... there wasn't any serious hostility I felt.

Also, remember there were a lot of first timers who were there because Oirland! They might not know the culture in the sport (which is unfortunately slipping away as it is).

What sets MMA fighters/supporter apart from "human pitbull fights" is the respect and the understanding of the skill involved. I applauded Brandao last night... we should always respect the fight and by extension the fighters.

I bumped into Diego on the quays this afternoon and he was saying how amazing the irish crowd were, and how he was delighted to be staying here for an extra couple of days to enjoy the country some more. Stood and chatted with me for 5 minutes and was no more arsed about the few boos and hoped to fight here again soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,541 ✭✭✭Davei141

I would wish people would stop repeating the fallacy that every non Irish fighter got booed because it is bull****. I don't like the booing full stop but no need to exaggerate it or flat out lie about it. Diego said on Wednesday joking when he got a bit of pantomime boos (And a crap load of cheers) that "In Brazil they boo much better". Every fighter got a good cheer/clap too. The only people who has anything negative to say about the crowd from an event that was watched all over the world by god knows how many people are on an Irish forum, it was bound to happen...

He's on a 24/24 contract I believe, but I'm sure he gets a lot more than that in sponsorship etc. He also probably got a 50k bonus.

I'm not a big believer in the "undisclosed bonuses", I think people use them as a get out clause when people criticise the UFC for low pay checks (there's an interview with Jim Miller who says he almost never got one), but in Conor's case, I think it's fair to assume he was rewarded handsomely under the table.

After 2 fights he was driving around in an M6 BMW, brand new. Plus not to mention the entire wardrobe hand tailored by Louis Copeland. It's fair to say he didn't afford that with his disclosed pay.

Also, according to Wiki, his win over Holloway was $12k/$12k

Leasing the car. Still lives with parents. UFC pay for flights/accom in USA etc.

    Saving a lot a wedge I imagine

It was defiantly second hand, unless he had a fake plate for the documentary. Also, Louis 'takes care' of people like Conor for obvious reasons.

As for the booing, the opponent expects the booing it's all part of the home / away fighter. Booing a guy entreating the ring is normal practice. As mentioned above its all part of the pantomime.

When the camera was on Cub it sounded like the entire arena booed him. He smiled (played along) into the camera.

Cubs behaviour with the fans in Dublin has actually made me a bit of a fan of his now. I think he's even said the words said between conor and his may have been a bit premature as he is just starting to get conor's personality and finds his talk entertaining now.

Comes across sort of forest griffin-esque and doesnt take everything in the media as serious as I first thought.

Yeah I tend to agree. I've heard more from Cub in the last two weeks than I did in the last two years. Also, I enjoy watching him fight, there's not a lot to dislike about the man.

Conor is trolling the UFC roster for his own personal gains & doing so with great success. Just like boxing, it's all part of the business / game.

Any clued in UFC fighter knows this & wouldn't (shouldn't) take it personally.

I think so too. Cub is well aware at this stage what Conor is doing. He already said he respected Conor for saying the same stuff in person too as he said online.

Conor is very cognisant of what he's doing too in all aspects of his game (fighting and media) - his post fight interview with Helwanni is very telling.

I was talking to Cub for a good while in Temple Bar on Thursday. Really mellow cool guy. Had nothing bad to say about anyone but genuinely felt that he was next in line for a title shot and Conor was a few fights behind him.

Handled himself well when some yobs came over to give him a little stick over fighter McGregor, he just sat there chatted with everyone having his pint of Guinness and won them over.

    and he would be right.

If I was Conor I would prefer Cub to challenge for the title first. Conor & Cub are of a similar level. The top 3 guys operate on the next level, IMO. Let Cub test the waters first.

Of course, Conor won't think like that but his time will come.

Yeah I shared his opinion . Great ambassador for the sport and deserved #1 title contender.

I think right now the top three exciting fighters @ 145

    1. Aldo
    2. Cub
    3. Conor

These are the guys I am really looking forward to mixing it up most.
