Hi guys, I´m heading over to London on the 13th for a Wicked matinee on the Sat followed by dinner somewhere nice. It´s the somewhere nice that´s troubling me. I don´t know anywhere and I don´t have time to trawling maps and review websites to find somewhere. don´t like to say nothing ethnic, but one of the girls is a fussy eater - she doesn´t even like pizza... how crazy can you get, right? And I´d like for there to be the possibility of cocktails after....
    .
Budget would be about 30-40 each (not including cocktails). What can you suggest?

I can't think of anything offhand, but I've found toptable.co.uk to be very good for restaurant ideas. if nobody else suggests anything, take a look there and you'll probably find something.

Really nice Thai in Victoria... http://www.mangotree.org.uk/

They do lots of nice cocktails and should be able to cater for fussy eaters!

Get down to the Jugged Hare on Vauxhall Bridge Road. A great selection of pies, chips and beers. If she doesn't like it tough look but you will enjoy it.

The Jugged Hare & Mango Tree are good recommendations above. Just throwing it out there as your friend is a fussy eater:

Cardinal Place is very close to Wicked. There you will find a Zizzi (you did say she didn't like pizza, but classic, mid-range Italian stalwart dishes to be had), a Nandos, Browns, Wagamama & a Spanish restaurant whose name evades me right now. None that would might qualify as 'nice' though depending on your friend's standards! The surrounds lack character though as it is wedged between a few office blocks so unless any of those are really where you want to eat I would give a miss. All would have you fed & watered pre-cocktails for £30-40

Also v. close to Wicked, on Wilton Road in Pimlico, you are a short walk from another Nandos, an A Wong's (specialising in quality Asian food) that is very nice, getting good reviews, and if she could handle Asian, she can be picky & go al a carte while you enjoy a tasty, but limited, 2 course menu with a glass of decent wine for £12.95. Would book in advance there though as v. hard to get a table if you just rock up. For French Bistro style there is a highly rated About Thyme (can't vouch for it myself) further down the same road, and a not fancy but fun Preto, a Brazilian restaurant. Avoid Uno, an Italian that is over-priced and over-rated as far as I have heard (avoided it on the back of that feedback), and Tozzi a new bar/tapas restaurant that has opened in the Park Plaza beside Victoria is also apparently not worth the money, and I have had a look in and IMO lacks a lot of character and isn't worth it if this is your only night out in London.

If by nice, she wants 'fancy', you could go to the aforementioned Mango Tree, or into Belgravia just the other side of Victoria Station, across Buckingham Palace Road. There is a street there, Elizabeth St, that has one of the best gastropubs in London, The Thomas Cubitt and they do really tasty food in the starters for £5-10, mains for £10-£20 range & glass of wine for about £5. There should be nothing too adventurous, classic British, but done very well and you could reserve a table in the upstairs dining room. Menu is online and is worth checking out. They do great cocktails aswell (about £10), but it is a pub rather than somewhere to go for cocktails for the night. Both Elizabeth St & the parallel Upper Belgrave Road (I think its that one, but basically the one parallel closest to Victoria) have a few Olivo Restaurants. Olivomare (fish), Olivocarne (meat), Oliveto (Mainly pizza) and there is a deli version & an ice-cream place, but are all higher-end Italian places that my Italian colleagues swear by for their various specialities and they are a picky bunch. Would just about come in around your budget if you are selective. Again, I think the menus are online. Santini is also around there, another pricy Italian and i have been and would give a miss.

A little further afield, Orange/Mozart Sq is about a 15 minute walk or a very quick cab hop (similarly for Sloane Sq which I will come to next). They have another good gastropub, a sister pub to the Thomas Cubitt, called 'The Orange' specialising in similar fare, but I can't vouch personally. La Poule au Pot, is also there, classic French, slightly overpriced and with the classic snobby French waiters and a set menu that would be within your range.

A similar distance, but just hop in a cab, is Sloane Sq. It will be livlier than Belgravia & prettier than around Victoria. The Christmas lights are up around the square and it is looking nice & festive! The recently opened Colbert is also doing French classics which could be an option. There is a Mexican club on the square, Tonteria, which could be good for cocktails. It is dressy and I think you have to pay in on a Sat (2 reasons I have never made it in :) ) but would fit the bill. A little further down the Kings Road is Bluebird cafe (definitely a cab-ride, not a walk from Victoria, about £10 fare in a black cab), which will fit the 'nice', easy menu & cocktail requirement. High liklihood of running into a Made in Chelsea character so you get an idea of the crowd! Don't know if they take reservations though. Often a queue outside which isn't something that you want to contemplate on a cold December evening, but just beside it is Beaufort House, which could be an option for cocktails afterwards, but they do food too and maybe could hit a couple of birds with the same stone. Barts is a great little speakeasy down that way that is also an option for cocktails afterwards. Best arrive around 10.30pm, is small but one of the few 'hidden speakeasy' options around this way. In all of these cocktails will be expensive , around £10 a pop, though I find that the way in most of central London for proper cocktail places & find mixing it up with the odd glass of wine will keep the bill down...

Depending on where you are staying, it is a shame that she is fussy as a quick tube ride down to Brixton for a bite to eat in Brixton Village followed by cocktails in The Electric Social, Kaff or The Market could be fun. Definitely an edgier option than the above, but a hell of a lot cheaper and a lot of fun.

Gosh, I went on there, but hope its useful, check out the websites for any that might work and double check the menus for prices! I am also assuming by cocktails you mean proper cocktails & not say, a gin/tonic that will vary btw £6-8 around those places (ex Brixton) depending on the brand of gin used & if they give you Fevertree tonic over Schweppes...

If you want something that is a little unique amongst all the chain restuarants, I can't recommend the Cinanomn Club enough (http://www.cinnamonclub.com/ ). It is located in the old Westminster Library, close to Westminster Abbey and walking distance from Victoria (less than 15 mins) or 3/4 mins in a cab.

Staff could not be more helpful, a fussy eater won't phase them. We've eaten there a few times and they have always looked after the gf who has special dietary requirements.

To the cocktail end, they have two really nice contrasting bars, on th ground floor they have a bar in a drawing room setting....then downstairs they ahve a slightly more modern bar.

All of the press reviews speak for themself. You would comfartabley eat there for less than £40 excluding drink each.

Don't bother brining her to The Jugged Hare. Keep it for yourself and enjoy it some other day.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had wanted something more upmarket than pies and burgers - that wasn't what I meant by fussy - and found something on toptable as suggested above. Got a great deal on the site and wined and dined four of us for £84! Dinner, dessert. We were happy. Thanks again!
