Giving blood

I have never given blood before and I'd like to start doing so on a regular basis in the new year. I'm just wondering what the preliminary procedures are before I get to it. I assume that I would have to be tested for suitability and/or infections (AIDS/HIV) and the like. Also wondering if blood can be donated at major hospitals rather than in those transfusion units because I live very close to one.

    Thanks.

Hospitals are not set up for collecting blood donations. Check out the ibts website for when the mobile unit is in your area. You can also check out if you are eligible online.

Every sample is tested for HIV and many other viruses, so you don't have to do any preliminary screening.

There are lots of medications that make you ineligible to give blood, such as some blood pressure meds. Their online checker is a bit simplistic.
