The companies have been found to underpay tax as a result of an audit
Corrib House Hotels Ltd Under-declaration of Corporation Tax & VAT €371,892.50
Skeffington Arms Ltd Under-declaration of Corporation Tax, PAYE/PRSI, Stamp Duty & VAT €4,133,814.75

I'm assuming they are connected as they are at the same address. That's a pretty significant chunk of money to have to pay.

Underpaying PAYE/PRSI is particularly scummy: often the employees affected don't find out about it for years ... until they need a benefit for some reason and discover that they're not eligible.

The fine was €1.3 , interest €0.9 and tax was €1.8

They own two hotels (skeff and prince of wales) two night clubs (karma athlone and galway) and a few other bits and pieces.

The family is ridiculously wealthy anyway and the company turns a decent profit so they will be grand.

The same reason most people fiddle tax, greed. The family who owns the business has access to sums of money which is multiples of the €4.5million they have been ordered to pay.

They need to fire their accountant. Whoever he was, they need someone who will have them paying as little tax as possible without breaking the law, the fact that whoever it was doing their books was willing to let them break the law means they were a bad accountant.

Any company that doesn't pay 1.8 million in tax is going to be turning a decent profit!:)

you are assuming the accountant knew about it. The accountant can only work with the figures they are given.

If door entry is a tenner and 50 entries disappear, thats 500 quid thats "disappeared"
