Just heard this nut job mayor Darren Scully is back once again on Niall Boylan (don't ever listen to this show good god my god)

This is the guy who said he wouldn't represent black Africans because they were aggressive... lost Fine Gael party whip because of it... and now welcomed back with open arms... AND here we go again, looks like he hasn't learned his lesson...

Ah sure he met one Ugandan person who hates Nigerians so it's fine for him

    And then this beauty:

Does he think it's somehow better to say discriminate against certain African countries instead of "all" black Africans? Well, a little better I suppose...

Worst thing is people will agree with this clown

I think he is right in what he said. His statement was based on his personal experiences and if he felt that a certain demographic were being rude, obnoxious and boisterous then he is entitled to tell this people to take a hike

Ireland has progressed so much but man, the level of ignorance is still outstanding. Always displayed in threads like these.
These lads are welcome to head back home any time they feel like it...
There are some people here not out of choice but necessity. You can't assume their backstory.

We pretend to welcome everyone with open arms in this country. Some however, are more welcome than others...

Necessity? The vast majority from the country in question are here for purely economic reasons, and got to stay because of rules around children, despite having bogus asylum applications rejected.

What? Can you give us some evidence please for this claim that people are staying here even though their bogus asylum applications are rejected?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Mango, you asked camel jockey for evidence,
I note you are a moderator, and also I dont know if you disbelieve camel j. Or you would like other s on here to have evidence available on screen.
I dont know how to show links but I do know that out of the first 5000 asylum seeker applications from Nigerian people that only TWO were approved.
I have no way of knowing how many of those refused left this country, but I think few did.
At the start of the great arrivals of asylum seekers, of various nationalities, children born here were deemed Irish. We voted to change that since. afaik the parents of the Irish children are entitled to stay until the children are 18.

While what he said is obviously unacceptable, the good people of Naas will decide next year whether or not he is fit to continue as an elected public official following his comments, not a few people on an anonymous public message board.

I wouldn't vote for him, but if he gets enough votes to elect him then the people of his electoral area will have deemed him a suitable public representative, regardless of what he has said.

That's how democracy works, and while it's a long way from perfect it's still the best show in town. There is no better alternative.

"You can't assume their backstory", but anyway, do you despise people you know who go to the likes of America and Australia for a better life?

Edit; Actually, on seeing your previous posts, don't answer that. I don't think it's worth going into an argument over.

This is it, let the people decide. While I personally doubt he'd be much of a loss to politics if he called it a day, that is for those he aspires to represent to decide.

He certainly shouldn't have been subjected to a criminal investigation. His comments were ill-judged, clumsy and ignorant but hardly hitlerite. Nigerians weren't suddenly lynched on the streets of Naas over Scully's remaks.

    A massive fuss over nothing.
    An opportunity for competitive outrage.

Basically, that the statement seems to be merely riding on speculation, prejudice and not fact. Or at least it seems to be that way with no backing.

There is no PC Brigade here anyway. Just a group of people who have respect for their fellow person. I think Irish people have become accustomed to dismissing racism because of strong knee-jerk reactions and even of the term 'PC Brigade, but what the guy said was textbook racism. I think it's only fair to call people out on it. It's a nasty thing to ever have to experience, I don't think some people on the thread are aware of that. Lots of little terms floating through the thread that dehumanise whole groups of people and make them sound like an annoying existence in the country, which I do think is shocking to be honest.

    Not trying to sound snooty but;

racism - the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

"This is the guy who said he wouldn't represent black Africans because they were aggressive..."

It is a textbook example. All Africans are aggressive brutes, etc etc.

    They're either

    1) Racist
    or
    2) Not racist

Political correctness has nothing to do with it.

He very well could have encountered rudeness and aggression from a lot of African people; even so, there are some things you do not say as a public official, because they will polarise and inflame no matter what.

Africa is a massive place - he could at least have narrowed things down a bit, rather than causing all African people in the town offence. And then saying he just wouldn't represent African people, effectively blaming all Africans for the behaviour of some, was just a no-no.

He may not even be a racist, just a dope. But it's cut and dry - he was wrong to say what he said to the public, in the capacity of public official.

    "Allowed"?

You're "allowed" say what you want within the rules and everyone else is just as free to do the same. If you can't hack people disagreeing--disagreeing, not stopping you from saying what you're saying, keep that in mind--with you then that's your problem.
