May not look exceptional at the minute and probably will not be.

However still liklihood of 60kt gust in Dublin region tomorrow morning, perhaps even 65kt, so something to keep an eye on.

    Less chance of major damage.

We have an extra 250 people tonight on the weather forum

Had a look at the 18Z HIRLAM. Storm force winds start to reach the west coast at around 4am. Peak winds of 30-35 knots then crossing the country and peaking on the east coast around 9-10am.

30 knots is currently the wind at Bemullet at the moment, if that helps in imagining what to expect.

Gusts would be higher. And more sheltered areas won't be as windy etc.

What was all the hype about so? Has there been a downgrade?

60-65kt is still a severe wind gust for Dublin.

The pressure recorded from the centre of the low will be near the deepest 3 in the last century. Noteworthy enough.

Way the two centres have organised is making difficult to ascertain windfield.

looks like RYR891A is having a 2nd attempt at landing

    EDIT : already noticed

What part of winds not picking up in the East till later tonight are you not understanding. Don't know how many more time people like Maq have to post it.

It doesn't take a huge wind to be a nuisance for travel. Stop telling people it's over when it's not. I believe Weathercheck posted time of something like 6-11am for peak strength in the East. How strong the peak will be, who knows, but it isn't over.

Hang on, you're the bloke who posted this earlier on:
John.Icy - I think I'm ready to stop following this event for now due to my location in South Kildare, it's not going to be anything too spectacular ... but really now I'm looking to Friday.

Landed in Dublin about an hour ago, wasn't bad at all. Few bumps over Amsterdam, the UK and on final. The clouds out in the Irish Sea are full of snow at altitude, could see the flakes every time the strobe light on the wing flashed.

Don't know if you saw this earlier (or on the TV forecast). It's the secondary low on the ECM heading into the west coast.

Well, nine hours from my last post on there are now 7 MetE stations reporting pressure below 960hPa, with Finner Camp in Donegal recording 956hPa. Dublin is at 961hPa, with Sherkin and Roches Point the "highest" at 968hPa. All stations are pretty much averaging a drop of around 1hPa/hour since lunch time.

The M4 buoy is reporting 952hPa, though it is much less windy then at Kinsale Energy which recorded a 60kt gust. Both Kinsale and M6 are reporting wave heights of over 6 metres.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,513 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Worth noting that the K5 buoy west of Hebrides has dropped to 940 mb and the K4 buoy in outer Donegal Bay to 950 mb, as of 23z ... I was holding off on posting this hoping to add M6 but it has not updated from 22z when winds were gusting from WSW to 58 kts.

Peak winds likely before sunrise around 0500-0600h lasting from then to perhaps 1100h (from most recent model guidance). Sticking with my earlier forecast of max gusts near 140 km/hr. Sadly we have no buoys or ships in the ideal location to measure conditions southwest of M6 where the strongest winds are likely to be now, from satellite I am estimating they are 55 knots.

Yes, because I'm an extremes enthusiast. I've been through the winds that are currently forecasted for this storm for my southerly location, so it isn't exciting me in that case. I never said the winds couldn't cause any damage. :)

    Pilots are amazing.

Pax prob sh!ttin themselves, as I would be, in fairness.

We don't know what's going on up in the pointy end of a plane, and they are too busy getting us onto dry land to tell us either.

So we do get a bit worried.!

Fair dues to all the crew getting them home safe for Christmas!
