Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Howdee all.

A music fan here, but only a passing interest in this genre over the years. I've dipped in here and there, and would like guys like Gang Starr, Mos Def, Jurassic 5,

However, I've only ever dipped into songs as opposed to albums. (bar Mos Def Black on Both Sides).

I'd even be open to Jay Z and the likes.

I always recommended Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious to people who like different types of music but want to check some hip hop. Plenty of influences in this album and if you like Juraassic 5, you should dig it. Even features Chali 2na from J5 on a song

De La Soul would be a good gap bridger, they got me initially into hip hop with their pop like sounds in some tracks. Easy to listen to and a great way of easing yourself into the genre

Ìf people from a Rock or Indie background look for recommendations from me, I'd normally always point them in the direction of P.O.S, Atmosphere and El-P

P.O.S - because his sound changes all the time and there are elements of all types of music there. Start with his album Audition, or if you are more nu-wave-ish, go for his recent album called We Don't Even Live Here.

El-P - Again for the noise he makes, not conventional hip hop and has lots of outside influence in his beat making. Cancer 4 Cure or I'll Sleep When You're Dear are 2 excellent albums.

Atmosphere - They have such a vast collection of albums, each evolving through different sounds and influence.

And if you liked the Black On Both Sides album, definitely check out his album under the name Black Star with Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek.

his album The Esoteric is pretty damn good too.

Look up MF DOOM and his many aliases. By far and away my favourite hip hop artist of all time. Ecclectic beats and tunes mixed with intelligent and interesting rhymes. His collaborations with the likes of Madlib, Ghostface Killah and Danger Mouse are also outstanding. I'd start with Take Me to your Leader (as King Geedorah), Vaudeville Villain (as Viktor Vaughan) and my personal favourite The Mouse and The Mask (as DangerDoom, a collaboration with Danger Mouse)
