My mom went into the vets today to get a bigger cone for Dude and drop in some cupcakes I bought to say thanks for not giving up on him (apparently they were absolutely thrilled, the cupcakes had paw prints on em :D) and she said to them about the fact he is doing some poops in the litter, and that he's objecting to being syringed and they were delighted, very good signs apparently :D I know we are far from out of the woods yet but his chances are looking better than they were this time last week :)

Back to being worried about my lil man - I'm like a yoyo! His tail was initially a bit swollen but in the last 2 days he has developed a golf ball sized lump at the tail head which feels like it's full of fluid.. A combo of metacam and I've packs isn't taking it down. I don't think it's an abcess as it's not red or hot to touch... Dunno what to make of it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 171 ✭✭JKM

Try and keep your spirits up. He is still in the process of recovery. Hopefully the lump won't be anything serious. Probably just some localised swelling.
If my experience with Ollie is anything to go by you will have a lot of ups and downs ahead of you.. hopefully it will all be worth it in the end. Dude will certainly thank you for sticking with him!
Still have all my fingers and toes crossed for you and Dude. :)

And now he ripped a stitch from his catheter.. looks like it's just going to be one of those days!! Hopefully I can keep the cath pushed in till tomorrow, and the other stitch will hold it in because both my parents are away for the day so I've no way to the vets!!

Also, I'm completely overwhelmed with the support everyone has been giving, both here and on my cat's facebook page. You guys are awesome :)

So his anal tone seems to have almost completely returned, he is pooping 95% of the time in the tray, and not going in his sleep anymore.

My only problem now is I'm afraid he has developed an infection, I tried taking his temp tonight but as his sphincter has regained function he was very resistant and I couldn't get a proper reading as I had no one to hold him for me. He's a bit shivery and has been sleeping more than usual today, but when he does wake up he is still eating, drinking and full of mischief. I'm still terrified that when the catheter comes out that he won't be able to pee, especially with it being Christmas next week and the vets being closed.. I'm hoping that the return of his anal tone will be a good indicator of his bladder but I'm no expert in feline neurology, and I can't seem to find much info online about the return of function, anything I find just says if they are atill incontinant after a month it is unlikely to return... Anyway ill probably have him in the vets tomorrow just in case he does have an infection and I'll ask their opinion on his prognosis now.

My mam was laughing at me earlier, I told her to return any present she had bought for me for Christmas because all I want is liquid gold to come out of my little man! I couldn't care less if I didn't get a single present as long as Dude pees! And if he does it before Christmas I've promised him that I will accidentally leave the turkey on the floor and if he happens to come across it, so be it :P

We use the same vets as you, they have an emergency number and will be available all over Christmas if you need them:)

Thanks! I know, I rang the emergency number at 5am as I was so worried about Dude, he was just laying there shivering :( still very lethargic this morning but at least he only puked the once. And he purred a tiny bit earlier. They always get sick at the most awkward of times!!

They certainly do. Felix used to go mad when we had to take him to Limerick. He'd break all his claws trying to get out of the carrier

Dude is back in the vets tonight, he had the catheter taken out, he's running a temp so they are going to give him antibiotics and pain relief and most likely take his tail tomorrow as it is massively swollen from lack of circulation. Going to see how he gets on for the weekend without the catheter and if he doesn't pee he can get another back in, but hopefully he will pee!

I hope Dude is feeling better soon. Having had a cat who'd had his tail amputated before he came to us and having one now who lost her tail before we got her, I can tell you that the tail=less or stubby tail look is very cute. I smile every time I see Poppy's little stumpy tail swishing. It's only the length of my thumb.

Honestly, it never affected Henry's balance or ability to jump or do any other cat thing and the same is true of Poppy. Hey, Dude has got so much cute going on anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

Yeah I'm not really bothered about him becoming tail less, it was annoying him anyway because of it being limp, it was throwing him off balance so his balance will probably improve without it. One of my formar details who I have to my granny as a farm cat had no tail and she got on just fine (and was very origionally called 'cat with no tail' :P). She turned out to be a right sweet heart too once I tamed her!
I'm just hoping beyond hopes that he pees overnight and continues to do so, it would be the best Christmas present ever!!

Fingers crossed for our Dude this morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

He didn't pee over night :( He hasn't gone in for surgery yet as apparently they are crazy busy so we will know more later. I'm still hopeful though...! Oh any apparently he is bright and happy and the nurse has been chatting away to him all morning :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

His surgery is done so he is now a tail-less cat, still didn't pee, he's staying in the vets again tonight and if he doesn't pass anything he will be getting another catheter to keep him going through Christmas, and if he still doesn't pass anything when that one comes out there isn't anything more that can be done for him :( so just pray pray pray that with the tail gone he may be encouraged to pee!

At least with the tail gone there's one less thing for his body to deal with. Keeping everything crossed for you both.

I've been following this thread and Dude's progress and am rooting for him. Said a prayer for him tonight.
Come on Dude - you can do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

Thanks so much, I really do appreciate it! The vets are going above and beyond for him, like they operated on him today where they normally don't on a Saturday, and they are opening up tomorrow so we can collect him! Everyone in on his side so now we just need him to do the business - literally! I'm going to talk to the vet about physio tomorrow too, one of the nurses in our practice specialises in physio and uses an electropulse machine which apparently can help with nerve repair. Will do anything we can for him!! But most of all I hope he pees overnight, I don't mind if he has a catheter over Christmas but if he didn't it would be so much less stress for all of us!

Will be thinking of you all. I forgot to mention to you have we had a cat with serious nerve injury in the leg. The vet recommended that we pts as the cat was semi feral & lived outdoors. He just dragged his leg behind him.

We put him in a dog crate in the shed & it took many mths but very slowly the nerve damaged healed & he lived to a good age.

Just got off the phone with the vet, his tail is healing nicely but he didn't pass urine overnight, a couple of small patches but nothing meaningful so he has a catheter in again, he has feeling to half his bum which is great. The vet can't guarantee anything but said he's doing too good so far to consider having him put to sleep at this point unless we encounter any complications. He's had an antibiotic that covers him for 2 weeks so we should be good through Christmas infection wise. Just hopefully this extra time will allow him more recovery!

Dude is now known as stumpy mc bald butt, he has a lot of swelling in the stump like what was in the tail. Hoping it will go down itself without having to be drained, the vet said when they took his tail it was full of bloody fluid, hoping it's the same again and not an abcess or anything!

the poor guy he has been through alot. i hope ye have a nice quite and incident free Christmas and please God he'll start going to the toilet.

    Thanks :)

He's flying it this morning, he can move a lot faster without his limp tail hindering him! He slept in my arms last night, it was just lovely. At least I know if he doesn't make it through this, I've given him the best few weeks I possibly could! Also all the fluid that was built up in his tail leaked out through the stitch holes, so i don't have to worry about him exploding!!
