Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Lidl are advertising brussels sprouts for 18c/kg. Don't let this turn into a discussion of how awful brussels sprouts taste.

Guess Rudolf might not make it to everyones house then. We were happy with our 49c per kg carrots. Will make sure to check with aldi and lidl online next time we shop.

At the risk of being considered a tool, I just have to get this off my chest...if we get theses veg for almost nothing, are we helping Aldi/Lidl etc-by dint of huge purchase power-to ride roughshod over farmers/growers/suppliers. Like, how much do they pay for kg of potatoes if they sell them at such a ridiculously low price? I know this is the bargain alert forum, and I'm not trying to be a sanctimonious git, I suppose I just want someone to appease my guilty conscience!

I'd assume they are a loss leader.

Hope so! I have visions of some disgruntled supplier wishing we all (lidl/aldi customers) choke on our roast veg on Christmas day :-)

Brussel sprouts are actually nice when corrected in certain way eg with fatty bacon bits. I know everyone is on about how little farmers are getting. But I seen an article in the nytimes were US tomatoe farmers only get 1/2 cent a lb of tomatoes and they are still profitable.

The farmers get a fair price no matter what the veg is sold at.
Know someone whose brother supplies mushrooms to one of them.

Agricultural prices are generally guaranteed by the Common Agricultural Policy no?

Suppliers generally take a hit when the supermarket uses a product as a loss leader. One story of one supplier doesn't change that.

One payment that only applies depending on what yo were farming years ago. Lots of farmers get little or nothing.

12 cents in Aldi, not 8 (still, I am SO getting the pineapple and the melon and clementines)

    https://www.aldi.ie/en/product-range/super-6/

    9cents in Lidl:

Clementines were Spanish, Pineapple Costa Rica, Carrots French, Potatoes and Sprouts Irish - all are loss leaders for Aldi and Lidl

Other supermarkets would be paying the same prices and keeping the difference.

When prices go up doesn't mean the farmer gets a cut of that, look at the way milk prices went during the boom

After work I went to the Lidl in Dundrum; sadly all the parsnips and sprouts were gone. I got 3 kg of carrots for 27 cents. 2 kg have been chopped and are boiling away, they will be mashed and put into portions and frozen. The other kg will be made into soup in the slow cooker tomorrow. Bargain!

Its actually two 12-packs which are each priced at €16.99. And if you have one of the Indo €10 off vouchers a €50 spend, buy four packs and two packs of peanuts or something all for €40.

Been looking forward to the annual sprouts race to the bottom on price.:)

A question I've been wondering today.....can I freeze sprouts? Do I need to do anything before freezing them? I love me some sprouts but wouldn't be able to eat all that I'd like to buy over the next week.

I'd say freeze them individually and when frozen bag em up. Should be fine.

I don't believe that farmers/suppliers got hit by this. Aldi/Lidl are not leaders in sales yet (they own about 7-8% of the Irish market each) so they have no power to force suppliers to sell them Pineapples for 8c. Even if they were leaders, no supermarket can force anyone to sell at that price.
The practice of selling below the original purchase price is forbidden in some countries - at least the one I come from - as this led to unfair competition when some German and French chains tried to kill the competitors by doing this when starting their business in Poland.
This is allowed in Ireland - luckily for us, customers. But the cost is covered by Aldi and Lidl. The supplier would not survive this, just think about this - they have super6 every week - they would kill their supply chain in a matter of few weeks if the cost of the offer was passed onto suppliers, or - even worse - the farmer.

As far as I remember from last year's discussion of this, it was established that they work out a deal for supply for a full year at a time or something, and absorb the losses for these few weeks over the entire year. So no need to feel as guilty about ripping off farmers.

    .

It's started: Dunnes has them for 6 cents . Also carrots, melons, clementines, parsnips, pineapples. Don't bother with the melon, it's tasteless, but the clems are nice enough and the pineapples too

I bought a pineapple in Lidl 3 weeks for €1.50...
