Are major news events ever announced in-flight?

Imagine a major news event such as the assassination of Bin Laden or the death of Nelson Mandela. Are these stories announced on planes by the pilot to the passengers as they come to light on the ground? Have you as a pilot ever done so? Have you as a passenger ever experienced this? Someone me da worked with was on approach to Colombo when the tamil tigers attacked the airport, blowing up a few planes. Plane revved up and got the hell out of there to India.
Pilot said over the intercom that passengers on one side of the plane know why they're diverting, and there's no problem with the plane.
