Try rebooting before checking for more updates

What updates do you have pending? If it's a new version of Internet Explorer, try downloading the standalone installer and running that instead.

Had the same problem recently on my Win 7 machine relating to IE10/11

There's a lot about it online but there was no real guaranteed solution so I tried a few of the options and in the end just reloaded the machine (not a big deal as I have everything stored online/on a home server).

Working fine since and IE10 installed without an issue. IE11 I'm passing on for now as many sites don't work right with it (use Chrome anyway 99% of the time)
