What is your typical pre-race AND race nutrition/hydration plan for a HIM??

Most embarrassing moment in a race?

Do you think you can suffer more when you train, or in a race?

When you drink on your bike, which hand do you reach for the bottle with, or are you ambidextrous?

What two boards peeps would you want on a killer tri-relay team, what leg would each person do, and why?

    What is your biggest weakness?

Ever been to the US? If so, where? And how did you enjoy your stay?

Besides Kona, are there any events you'd want to do in the US??

Do you shave your legs? And if so, how often?

Who do you train with now to push you across the disciplines since you left B2R?
What sort of nutrition regime do you follow - Paleo or the likes?
Who do you use as your sound board for training and planning?
Are you all blinged out now or have you your eye on some some uber cool gear?
    Death row meal?
Choice of 4 guests to dinner?
Was it the B2R academy that transformed your results? Would doing the same training outside the squad environment have yielded the same gains?
How much down time will you take over the holidays?
What type of music do you listen to on the turbo?
Have you a playlist for your FTP tests?
Do you use the treadmill much?

    Favorite food?

I have a total sweet tooth - I'm a sucker for marshmallows (proper princess ones)... and haribo supermix!

In terms of meal times, I eat all foods - Italian would prob be the most common theme as a good pizza hits the spot.
    Oryx wrote: »
    Morning or evening person?

Tricky one - I am a late night owl but I enjoy early mornings when I've had more than 6 hours sleep.
I can never go to bed early enough so I guess evening person..
    Oryx wrote: »
    Worst habit?

I jitter/bounce my legs up and down under the desk in work a lot.
Not really much but I don't do the usuals that I'm aware of.
    Can be stubborn.

What do you want for Christmas?

Some more fitness would be nice but I'll take a good holiday with friends and family and good nights ahead - starting tonight to the drunken happy place! :D

What do you know now that you wish you'd known five years ago?

I try not to do regrets, life is too short.

The obvious is I'd like to have started swim bike run earlier...

Will you be sponsored or have you sought sponsorship for the coming season?

Nope and nope. I'm an age grouper enjoying triathlon as a hobbie all be it taking it quite seriously and dedicating quite a lot of time to it.
    zico10 wrote: »
How exactly did you go about joining the Base2Race academy?

I hounded Eanna a while - I spoke to him a few times, asked him some questions on training, he gave me some advice and sessions to do.
I reverted a few weeks later asking for next steps and showed the follow up I had done and that seemed to agree with his mentality.

Taken on as a trial for a week then to see how things go for both of us and didn't look back.

    zico10 wrote: »
Were there any standards you had to meet?

I would say 2 standards for an athlete to be a part of the group.
    Dedication
    Work ethic.

My first session was an FTP test. I suffered like a dog like I do in every hard turbo and was told if you keep that effort and ethic up then you're in.

    zico10 wrote: »
Do you think you would have achieved the results you did last season had you been self coached?

    No.
I was very new even last year but esp the year before.
I would not have got to my current standard in that time frame without high level coaching and proper structure/training plan.
    zico10 wrote: »
How did you approach longer bike rides when you trained for HIM races?

No change really - longer bikes were typically ride as you feel, not slog fests.
The odd one would have some efforts in it, but mainly just enjoy and get the distance done.

Odd TT effort also as an individual session.

    zico10 wrote: »
How will your approach differ as you prepare for full iron distance?

I wouldn't say it will differ, more that it will be more tailored and follow the areas I see are working/required to improve.

Currently, that is primarily in run strength. Then Swim, then bike.
Volume will play the biggest change.

I am also following a somewhat methodical process in trying to match my weekly training stress scores to a researched acceptable level required to get to good performance.
The next couple months is about reaching those levels and managing them correctly.

What is your typical pre-race AND race nutrition/hydration plan for a HIM??

I follow a low residue diet for the 3 days before race day.
This is low in fibre, and basically eating fast releasing simple carbohydrates with little to no fruit/veg.
This clears the digestive system and ensures I race a little lighter but more importantly a simpler system that hasn't caused any upset to date.

    Race day:
    - breakfast of simple rice krispies/rice cakes/marshmallows!
    - Energy drink sipping

    Race:
    - gel just before swim
    - bar either as one or 2 x halves in early stages of bike - first 10-20km.
    - thereafter I have a bottle which contains 3-4 gels mixed with water and I sip on that throughout as required.
    - 1 x bottle/bladder of hi 5
    - Run would be on feel - 1-2 gels maybe with sips of water/coke at aid stations depending on temperatures. I'll drink a lot more if it's warm.
    Dory Dory wrote: »

Athy - went to do first flying mount, went over the other side down onto my side/ass. Chain came off, shoe off bike, got back on humbled and laughing at myself... Amateur!
    Dory Dory wrote: »

In a Race, or in training if up against someone.
I love the competitive side, be it training with someone or racing against someone.

    Dory Dory wrote: »

    Always right hand.

    Dory Dory wrote: »

Interested for the fish like swim
I'd like to do the bike
Trinewbie for the run or huff n puff

Tough choices there really and could mix a few of those in diff legs.
    Dory Dory wrote: »

Swimming in open water has been a considerable weakness to date.

    Dory Dory wrote: »

Yes - Orlando Florida - fantastic holiday at disney/universal etc.
Yes - Miami Florida - raced the 70.3 and stayed a while, again brill place

So many places I want to go to in USA. California, New York, Vegas would prob be the top 3.
    Dory Dory wrote: »

    Wildflower would be up there.
Prob another 70.3 or ironman there also as so many to chose from.

No I don't, but I did a few times during race season under peer pressure from the B2R clean shaven group!

I haven't quite been converted to the regular status yet and last time was pre lost sheep so safe to say not till race season kicks off again! :D

    None.

Always wanted an arm one when younger, but never did it.

Now, Not so bothered by them - some look very cool, others not so much.

Meaningful ones always look well usually.

    Hi Frazz,

    a) What is your best time for a 40km/25mile TT?

    b) For turbo sessions longer than 2 hours what kind of session are you doing?

    Best of luck in 2014.

I'm fortunate to be in a good area and have some training buddies such as:
Niall Somers, Mark Horan, Bill McCormack, Kevin Keane, John Connolly, Katie Fitzgerald, and others.

Don't train with them all the time but we hook up for sessions when it suits our plans and enjoy them all.
    pgibbo wrote: »
What sort of nutrition regime do you follow - Paleo or the likes?

I wouldn't say I follow a particular nutrition regime, but I am a reasonably healthy eater prone to the odd let loose allowance.

I've experimented with no dairy, high fats, low carbs, fast releasing carbs, slow stodgy carbs etc and found a balance to be somewhere in the middle of all for me.
A few healthy items that would be in my weekly meals would be coconut oil, fruit/protein smoothies (typically sun warrier rice protein), chicken/veg stir fries, roast chicken/carrot/turnip mash combo's, bolognese with a lot of carrots either with wraps or spag occasionally, lasagne etc.

Some of the less healthy items may be an oven pizza, chicken goujons, white bread, nutella :o ,haribo supermix, marshmallows and lately festive chocolates & haagan daas! :D

    pgibbo wrote: »

I don't use these contacts enough yet as I'm somewhat in what I deem to be pre-training so to speak.
But Eanna McGrath and Joe Lynch would be 2 of my good advisors from time to time and much appreciated too.

    pgibbo wrote: »

I've to pick up the Shiv Fuel Cell but other than that I'm good thankfully!

Hard to beat a good Steak really isn't it???

Followed with a quality Chocolate Fondant or brownie derivative...

    pgibbo wrote: »
Choice of 4 guests to dinner?

Chris McCormack - love him or hate him, he's a genius in his field and I love his approach and zest for triathlon

    Dave Scott - legend

Denzel Washington - love his work

Will Ferrell - maybe the other anchorman buddies along too!

    pgibbo wrote: »

I think the B2R Academy sped up what I would hope was a path I was on anyway.
I don't see training in a group as paramount to progress, and in fact now do most of my training solo.

I see that it takes a certain mentality, dedication and discipline to be able to do the same quality of training that is done in a group environment with coach standing over several times a week.

Hard to match the coach element in fairness so whilst I don't think it's necessary, I do see the coach factor as a guidance and in many ways progression improver regarding time frame.

    pgibbo wrote: »
How much down time will you take over the holidays?

Unplanned - completely on feel and enjoying the holidays/catching with friends etc.

As it transpires, I haven't taken any extra days off per say, more dialled back the volume as I was away from pool and bike for most of this week - still ran most days.
Basically, unstructured based on feel, still utilising time off from work but also enjoying the holidays and de-stress.

    pgibbo wrote: »
What type of music do you listen to on the turbo?

    Primarily Dance/House.
Electronic Dance Mix Euphoria has a good few of my current playlist along with a few others.

In the B2R sessions, I was one of the few that didn't actually use earphones on the turbo - there was usually background music of some sort.

Since doing these solo now, it's primarily up tempo tunes.
If not a suffer fest session, then anything goes - new Eminem album is great as is the Drake album.
    pgibbo wrote: »
Have you a playlist for your FTP tests?

Just my go to dance/house playlist - used on most of my harder sessions be it turbo/run etc.

    pgibbo wrote: »
Do you use the treadmill much?

I'm currently using it around twice a week - only short easy runs after a swim and strength session at present.
Will be using it for some speed work when schedule includes also.

I find it a lower cost to the body, perhaps not quite the exact return but for increasing leg turnover and working hard in a controlled environment I do find it useful.

    Best of luck in 2014.

I have never done a 25mile TT as of yet.

I would like to enter the Nationals but the cost is somewhat excessive as I need to join a cycling club also.
Not in my plan to do this and train with them or do bike racing so we shall see.

Will look at calendar when out and see if suits then consider.

For turbo sessions longer than 2 hours, I will typically be mainly working aerobic zones such as 1-2 hours at zone 2, then zone 3 and zone 4 in shorter times dependant.

Basically, my longer turbo's would be mimics of normal medium/long outdoor rides but done with perhaps more specificity and a bit better return in some cases.

No real substitute for the outdoors, climbing that hill, pushing against the wind etc but when times suit a quality turbo can have similar returns in my opinion if pushed for time etc.

Thanks and best of luck to you also.

Your dinner guest, Dave Scott.....he was at our local triathlon in 2012 as the celeb guest and he's the one who gave me my prize at the awards ceremony. Had my pic taken with him, but had no real knowledge of who he was or what the fuss was about, but I guess he was something alright.

Some of these have possibly been asked already but:

Could you train full-time if money was not an issue? As in could you dedicate everything to triathlon at the expense of everything else?
Money no problem what would your dream month long holiday be?
Do you have any consistent niggles that you have to manage?
How much of your day is now dictated by triathlon?
Do you have swim advice from others now that you are not with the B2R swim group?
Do you get cravings and do you generally cave in or have you figured a way of suppressing these? If so how?

Ok, if money was not an issue then yeah I'd love to be training full time.

Dedicate everything to triathlon at the expense of everything else?
Too hard a question to know without going through it I think.

I mean, of course, with the luxury of time I would love to be putting in 30-35 hours training per week, recovering, sleeping, napping, etc around that as the pro's do it.

Does it come at the expense of everything else?
    What is everything else?
Social nights out as in no boozing? - I've done this and can cope without alcohol for medium to long periods so yes.

Tricky to really know as at the moment, triathlon I feel helps my work/life balance and is a great de-stresser as much as enjoyment factor.

If triathlon was "work" then who knows how it would affect you but the theory is Yes, it would be class.

    Bambaata wrote: »
Money no problem what would your dream month long holiday be?

So many countries I want to see and places I want to go to so I'd probably try to match a few off if a dream month long holiday...

See a couple of Formula 1 Races - prob starting in Melbourne Australia, then see another week or so of travelling there seeing Sydney, Brisbane, Surfers Paradise and the coast/great barrier reef.
Quick trip to USA to see NY, California, Vegas, maybe up to Canada to see the Niagara Falls and return via Thailand for some paradise beach wind down/full moon parties...

So 1 week Australia, 2 weeks USA/Canada and 1 week Thailand would tick quiet a few boxes :D
    Bambaata wrote: »
Do you have any consistent niggles that you have to manage?

    Thankfully no.

I have areas that I can feel tightening when I know a massage is due or I'll be pushing the muscles too far and approaching strains.
This is primarily my calf muscles - and I do almost daily calf raises off the edge of the bed to keep the strength there.

I'm not a forefoot runner at all but calf muscles do seem to be early indicators for me.

    Bambaata wrote: »
How much of your day is now dictated by triathlon?

I wouldn't call it dictated by triathlon.

I enjoy training, keeping fit, and also pushing performance levels for improvements etc.
If I was Banned from triathlon for copious drug usage :D:p , then I'd still be training and look to specialise in bike or run more etc.

So hard to say triathlon dictates x amount of time per day.

Training and keeping fit dictates around 3 hours per day on average I guess.

Do I think about triathlon outside of training? Yes of course.
It's fair to say it's more than a hobbie, but aside from that it is also fair to say it gets whatever spare time I feel appropriate or have at that time.

As an example over the Xmas hols it hasn't got much - I've been socialising, eating, did the odd run as I enjoy it, relaxing, catching up with friends etc so it depends on what's around me at the time.
    Bambaata wrote: »
Do you have swim advice from others now that you are not with the B2R swim group?

Not in place yet, but it is something I've been thinking about.

At present, I am getting good return from the 50m and swimming areas I feel are of benefit to me.

Going forward, I have the option of the B2R Flume with Eanna as well as a few training groups I can match up with.
I'm going to play this by feel and see when I feel it is needed.

    Bambaata wrote: »
Do you get cravings and do you generally cave in or have you figured a way of suppressing these? If so how?

During off season/Xmas, absolutely and I'm of the opinion if you can't enjoy yourself then what's the point.

So yes I've been eating chocolate, ice cream, crap food etc but trying not to go too excessive.

Come Jan I'll try lock it down, I only rarely drink fizzy drinks and crisps, so it would be the odd choc or sweets that would get me.

I try to keep it in balance, but am a sucker for marshmallows and Jellies throughout the year and it's a part of me I've accepted :D

On that note, I think now is an appropriate time to hand over the reigns to yourself Bambaata and open the floodgates!
