    Hi all,

Im looking to get a present for a person into networking. Hes only just starting out really and I know hes trying to build up a bit of a toolkit.

    Would this be any good.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/cable-tracker-with-tone-generator-n74cc

or he was talking about a tester for internet wires when you make them?

Or if anyone has any suggestions Im all ears :)

A LAN cable tester would be a better gift and would get more use

Its a bit of a lottery at times all right

That will check cables for the basic stuff like shorts n swaps :
The Atlas IT will then analyse all the lines from one end to the other and identify the connection pattern
Any wiring faults are clearly displayed including breaks, shorts or swaps.

"Proper" ones are expensive - he probably has one anyway

Well I just meant is that one a good one. Like is it a good brand? If its a decent one I dont mind paying it..... but just knowing the quality of other stuff I have bought from maplins in the past... if its going to be crap quality then Id rather save some money and buy a cheap Chinese job of ebay for half the price.

Yeh that was actually the plan all along until he said one day that he thinks they are a waste of time apparantly all his mates rushed out and bought them and never used them in the end.

So now Im in a panic its the week before xmas and Im trying to find some decent cable testers and I obviously wouldn't know a good one if it hit me in the face. I might just chance the maplin ones.

It's up to you of course but giving tools to professionals is tricky and might not get much use.
Maybe go with something not work related?
